2022 Gas vs 2024 (4xe?) Financials

Hi. Environmentalism (if 4xe) and Bikini color aside, is there any reason I should pay extra for a new 2024 over a 2022 gently used Gladiator for a lot less money? The refresh doesn’t change much to warrant what will probably be a $25k difference in price (say 40k vs 60k). Even if 4xe, I’d never breakeven on fuel costs. This is really my brain saying “don’t wait, get it now” but I want to be practical. Seems a wants vs needs situation, and I can’t come up with any needs (beside bikini blue, a bona fide need).

Do we even know for sure what colors and power train combinations are going to be available in 2024?

I kind of went thru this very same thing. We had decided that it was time to replace the DD WK2 for a Gladiator. My original time table was Feb/March of 2024. Would have seriously considered a 4xe if that was an option at that time.

Along came a very lightly used 2021 Rubicon (under 4000 miles) that was optioned with everything we wanted and more, for a price I was happy (compared to new) to pay. It wasn't the Hydro Blue that momma wanted but it was Snazzberry, which is a color she did like and I loved. We bought it, a basically new 2021 Rubicon for significantly less than a new 2024 Rubicon would be.

How many miles on the 2022? If it's low, someone else has taken the depreciation hit that all new vehicles get hit with for driving it off the lot. To me, sounds like a no brainer.

4xe is all but confirmed for 2024 at this point. It would be a very big surprise if the plug-in powertrain did not make it to the 2024 JT.

That being said, expect intial demand for refreshed JTs to keep MY24 prices high for at least 6 months after they start shipping, even longer for the new powertrain. The 4xe wrangler has been a run-away hit for stellantis, and as long as they don't severely overestimate initial interest, the JT4xe should be initially as well.

Meanwhile, 23s new can be had for serious discounts and the used market is still all f'd up.

I wouldn't compare a 24 against a used 22, i'd still be looking at a new 23. the difference between a gas 23 and a comparably equipped 4xe 24 is going to be between 3.5k and 7.5k on the sticker after tax incentives, add another 4.5k in rebates you're averaging a 10k difference in prices.

That's comparing like against like with one of the few dealers in the nation willing to sell 24s at the same dealer-level discount as 23 (like Koons or Gupton). If you insist on dealing local, you're probably looking at another 5-7k in dealer discount you'd be able to score on a 23 that they would refuse on a 24.

So depending on trim, if you're staying local a 23 gas new would be between 13k and 19k cheaper than a 24 4xe. if you're ordering and traveling to buy, 8k to 12k cheaper.

The smarter financial decision is the 2022 used, but do what you want to do

I'm being gifted my old 4Runner from my parents, so i'm about to do something completely ridiculous and replace n my JT with a 2 door JL

It's completely a guessing game until the official order books open for the 24's. If you want to compare financials between a used 22 and a new 24, you'll need to wait to see the actual prices of the 24's.

I don't disagree with this. That's why I asked for the mileage.

A couple thousand miles is practically new. But a 22 with a couple thousand miles on it for let's say $51,000 could be more than a 2023 with current discounts depending on how both were equipped. Or it could come in at $40,000 and the new one after discounts is $50,000.

Thanks everyone. There wasn’t a specific one for sale but I was looking at prices and you can get some 2022’s with 15-30k miles for 30-45k without looking far, and I was comparing that to what I can reasonably presume a new 2024 would cost (or even a 2023; while the employee discount is compelling, they’re still not down to used 2022 prices). Better trims for less money with low miles seems to win out “virgin” Gladiator. But like someone above said, yolo and you do you. The 4xe in bikini are my dream combos, so I’m just worried I’ll actually find out how irrational I am and what I’d pay for whiny brat “I want those” things! “You can have this blue 2022 and a bag of $20,000 cash or this teal 2024 and no cash”.

Can't do it. Too heavy and the 2.0 won't handle 6,000 pounds of towing.
Take my overland and add 700 pounds of batteries and you have enough payload for 2 adults.
So - "all but confirmed" still leaves a ton of questions as to which drivetrain - range, payload, towing, and so on. Yeah, likely a 4xe, but..........

Keep in mind.. will the 4XE be a totally different line item, not an engine choice in the basic JT line up.

You can shop Wringer 4XE or you can shop Wrangler for 2024... I would expect the same for JTs.

If you shop for ordering a new one custom built, yeah, for sure.
Shopping for a reign Wrangler for my wife, I simply shopped for a reign Wrangler and they were all lumped together.
If you are ordering, it will not be just a Gladiator but it will be a Gladiator 4xe.
If you are shopping for on the lot, it likely won't matter.

I doubt we will see the 4cyl 4xe in the JT and IF we do, I just don't see it being that practical. Basically for people that want to drive something that looks like a truck but wouldn't be functional as a truck whatsoever. I'm holding out we see a 5.7 option instead until the hurricane becomes available.
