Agreed that some of that depends on the state. Iowa it's a ticket and hefty fine if you can't provide a license, registration and proof of insurance (the latter are in the vehicle). But if you provide them your license within 24 hours, it negates the ticket as I recall.
You really don't need a license on your person. LEO already have all the info at their fingertips. In WA, not having a valid license on your person (not suspended/revoked) is a $200 ticket, reduced to $50 if you contest it in court with proof you have a license. But legally speaking, the law only applies to "him or her."That's going to be a fun case to present before the court.
As far as the OP goes... what wallet? I have a phone case and a money clip. I before that I had a front wallet. Haven't had a folding back-pocket wallet for probably 15 years. The Costanza era is over.

Here health providers absolutely require a paper copy of your insurance card. No exceptions, and a valid photo ID. Even the bank. No, a phone version won't count. Been in those places when people have tried. And here, your state driver license is a valid ID for almost anything, anywhere. So really if you carry those two things - insurance card and license, little else matters. Pay by phone (except at some big stores - Walmart, Menards, you still must use a CARD, can't wave your phone around, I've tried)
Things are catching up - I asked a manager at Menards - his response - corporate says to update the many thousands of CC readers in all the locations outweighs any benefits since most people have at least one credit card. That's his quote.
But at some point that will change - old CC machines will die, and they'll be upgraded by attrition if nothing else.
As long as I have a CC, license, insurance card, that's pretty much all I need and those are simple to carry, take little room and lay flat in a pocket inside an RF protected cover my wife makes. But I may look into one of those neat wallet things I've seen on TV. Those are cool.
