Did you have any type of warning before they went bad? I park in a dirt lot at work, no sense in keeping the thing clean. Last couple weeks I’ve noticed when leaving work, my right rear is making a cricket like squeaking sound, and it seems to correspond with turning and rolling slow coming out of the parking lot. Definitely metal squeaking somewhere back there. It only does it for the first 500 feet or so then goes away. I can’t track down the location, I just hear passenger rear with all the windows down. My first thought was maybe a dirty rotor that wiped itself clean, but I’m hearing it every day now. It’s 10pm when I leave so hard to work in a dirt lot with no light. Wondering if an axle seal is going bad and this is my warning. No sign of leaking anywhere. I’d love to get some feedback from others with squeaky rear ends 👍🏻

I noticed mine when I was at discount tire getting the tires rotated. I have a habit of walking to check everything while the tires are off, and noticed the seal had failed.

Are you getting the noise with the brakes applied?
I had a seal fail on a Dodge 2500, the first indication was a squeak when I applied the brakes, then I saw the gear oil on the inside of the tire.

I discovered mine by doing a visual inspection of my truck before a road trip.

I got to make an appointment with the dealer for that and the passenger valve cover (leaking)

You will notice a build up of dirt and axle grease on the inside of the wheel. I had mine in for warranty axle seal repair at about 10,000 miles. Prior to the repair I checked the axle fluid level and the lube was still at the top of the check plug. Although the leak makes a big mess of the backing plate and wheel it is a minor leak. Check the fluid level and see how low the fluid level is.

I was in the dealership recently for service and was advised of a second service repair for the rear axle seal. This apparently includes a redesigned axle seal or axle assembly. I have changed my axles out and didn’t take the dealership up on the repair.

That’s a great picture for reference. I’ve been looking for grease on the tires and wheels but haven’t found any yet. I’ll have to pull a wheel off and see if I have the same mess that you had.

It seems like it’s more of a slow speed rolling thing, and doesn’t happen when I apply the brakes. That’s why it’s been hard to diagnose. Unless I just have one squeaky brake pad and the rest are fine 🤷‍♂️

I had a 2016 JKU that was a few months old, I looked under the back one day and could see seepage near the rotor. It was fairly obvious. For the JT, I read somewhere you can tell by fluid accumulating on the inner surface of the wheel. That's the first place I looked for it on mine.

Great question. I’m at 38k miles on mine. If it is in fact a leaking seal I’m on pretty good terms with my local dealership so they should be able to warranty the part. If not I guess I’ll be doing it myself 🤷‍♂️

If you tackle it yourself, please share the process. Mine aren’t leaking, but every seal leaks eventually.

Did axle seals on an 07 Frontier about a year ago, I can’t see too many things being different from that to this. I’ll keep you posted 👍🏻

Very nice. Thanks. Is it typically done from the diff side, or the C side?

On the frontier we never had to touch the diff, axle unbolted from the end of the housing and slid right out. Hoping the JT will be similar

That’s how the axle comes out for sure. I’ve had them out. I don’t know how the seal comes out.
