Tailgate Mounted Fire Extinguishers

Project took a while. I've now got 2 A,B,C five pound fire extinguishers and will be purchasing a Halothane one to fill the third mount. This project took a while. I needed to make the whole system mountable to the tailgate, easily and quickly removable if I wanted the truck to be used as a pickup, easy to access, and sturdy.

The system mounts to already present holes for mounting interior tailgate panels except for the two bottom holes which are carefully installed rivnuts The mounting screws are clamping lever handles so I can undo them by hand. Since the extinguisher weigh a lot the mounts are designed to sit on the bed of the truck through the plastic bases.

I mounted a window breaker hammer there as well (I have a nicer one mounted in the cab)

The tailgate closes with a nice solid "thunk".

And I thought I was overdoing it by also having two ABCs, a halligan and a NY roof hook in my bed. Where's the fire, doc? This from a 38 year pilot who is a volunteer firefighter on the side. Like your setup!

My life has been touched significantly by fire. I also once stopped a nascent grass fire by using a fire extinguisher. Which where it was could've gone really bad if it had spread. I don't think I've ever seen a car on fire or a home on fire where anyone ever said that there were too many fire extinguishers. So I agree that two ABCs and a Halothane extinguisher a good start. I'm just hoping that if I ever show up somewhere and we use them all that someone like you will also happen to be there.

On another note I see my vehicle as less of a rough and tough off roader and more designed to be a support vehicle for problems I might run across. So far it's been mostly pulling people out of ditches and high centered on snowbanks in snowstorms. On the list of future purchases is an AED unit. That will be the crown of my project.

Very Creative and looking functional. I go with Element E50.. Clips to the roll bars, can mount along side the seats. Very small and does not leave a mess to clean up.

Simply WOW! I'm impressed from the packaging to the install. Fit and finish is spot on and have already ordered a few extras now that I have it installed and can visualize all the possibilities! Including the tools to take the stock panels off and install the SpecGate plates was a nice surprise and bonus! Thanks for the deal!

I challenge you to watch videos using the element sticks in windy conditions or depending on what is burning

They are a GREAT tool… but have certain limitations that render them useless, so having a traditional extinguisher is very important…. The biggest you can fit and deal with on the daily….

I was just searching for L-Track extinguisher mounts for the Spec-Gate I got with the group buy. There isn't much, it's all E-Track and X-Track.

I was thinking that the snuts would accommodate any mount without the added bulk of the fabricated backing plate.

I’ve seen the videos and most of them are using the sucker on outdoor wood fires that are explicitly stated by element as not intended use. In the videos where they are used on actual vehicle fires, they work surprisingly well. The reason I don’t use a full size extguinsher is for two experiences. One didn’t put out what was a rather manageable fire. The other put out the fire but totaled my truck. Apparently your supposed to run Halon (expensive af) if your gonna spray any electronics. So despite 2 devices, I was still stranded with a useless vehicle. Granted the element isn’t gonna magically save the vehicle but, that depends on the fire type and how quickly you deal with it. But all these videos I see where they can’t stop a simple brush fire with the e50, I have Jerry cans of water that would be far more effective. Ideally if money was no object, I’d have 15lbs of halon for my truck.
