I'm not understanding the market for this. The OEM oil cooler housing this screws into is plastic. If the OEM oil cooler had cracked and you replaced it with the aftermarket aluminum version, I would still rather have a plastic filter cap.

I'd say stay away. It isn't oil filter cap that causes the $1500k+ issue when gorillas crank down it wayyyyyyyyy past the 18 ft/lbs torque spec... it's the plastic housing the oil filter cap screws into that cracks. Stay within specs, there shouldn't be an issue.

Bypass valve is built into the cap. Unless OEM, I would avoid it for that reason alone.

Both halves of the part are plastic. There is nothing wrong with the plastic cap as designed as long as it is not over tightened or cross threaded into the bottom half. 18ft/lbs means 18 ft/lbs. I see no reason to use an aluminum cap here unless the bottom half was the same material. Just don't overtighten the cap. The o-ring will not leak if replaced each time and torqued correctly.

I just tighten it by hand until it stops. No extra torque. The o-ring seals it and keeps it from backing out. No leaks so far over two Pentastars doing this.

Same here, I have had no !eaks doing this.

I'd rather crack a easy to replace cap than a plastic oil cooler housing, and I've already bought a replacement oil cooler housing and cap.

I'd say nah. The filter inside the cap (in addition to the cap and housing, like has already been stated) is plastic too.

If the filter cap was accessed from the bottom, like on some toyotas, then I could see this as being a bit of extra insurance for a stray rock hit, etc, but since it's on top it just seems like someone had some spare aluminum and a is trying to make a buck.

This X3.I did this on my previous JK.The rubber O-ring does the sealing if that makes sense.

For some plastic filter covers, like for the fuel filter on a Cummins, the reason people go to aluminum is because the "nut" rounds off if the cover was put on too tight. Plus, some people think it looks cool. But here, if you put too much pressure on it trying to remove it you risk breaking the housing.

I'm still cringing about this other thread where the cap wouldn't come off because some yoyo had put two o-rings on it. They rounded off the nut then found a way to hammer the cover off. Not recommended. https://www.jeepgladiatorforum.com/forum/threads/stuck-oil-filter-housing-cap-removal-hack.86939/

What did they cost you?

For about 3 times that you can order a replacement oil cooler kit with a cap and filter even. 🙄
Something I ever ordered to have on hand when or if I need it.

I guess this would work great if already upgraded to the aluminum housing cooler
