2020 sport needs a new camshaft but it’s on backorder. They said not to drive until it’s replaced. Been 2 weeks now with no updates. Can’t even give me a loaner they said. They’re all out and if they had one they charged me $75/day since I’m out of warranty. Anyone got any inside baseball info on how long I’ll be waiting or how bad the backorder is? Thanks.

I doubt anyone knows exactly, I've recently read about a few folks getting them within a couple months. That timeframe included the work and the truck being back in service.

Is the truck throwing codes, misfiring? If the plan is already to include the camshaft I'd consider reaching out to other dealers in whatever range you'd be comfortable driving to.

I'd also recommend reaching out to insurance about rental coverage though.

Month back couldn't even get one off open market. I was told 6-months to whenever maybe a year if demand went up. You can start to get them now though when last talked to someone, but sounded like they had a dealer who had parts on the shelf. So it sounds like game of if you find the right person right now. But maybe it's getting better and you'll have one soon.

Long story short ended up being more then cam for me, never had symptoms until misfire & CEL light came on one day. No knock, no overheating, no avenger light etc... My cam sort of imploded a bit taking some of the block with it. In hindsight realize now it was losing some of it's pep and just did it slowly enough I never really paid attention that it was. In end I needed new motor unfortunately, so glad I didn't wait maybe months to get a cam that wasn't the only problem.

oh! That stink.

I didn’t notice anything until the check engine light came on one day. I stopped driving it that day.

Exceptional case btw... never heard anyone having that exact issue I did tbh. It also had close to 155k on it. With never a single issue with the motor until it did that. So take my experience with grain of salt knowing that.

Let's hope the dealer finds one soon for you though.

It's unlikely to ever cause overheating.
As far as "taking some of the block with it" - there's got to be a lot more to it. Cams are on top of the heads.. Even if one broke, the odds of having any impact on the block are pretty much non-existent.

I'd almost bet you didn't have the typical intake cam high lift section issue.

There are many threads, hundreds of posts on this situation.
It's very safe to say - no one has any information that's reliable or worth the pixels it's displayed with.
In the end, it's one of those "you'll get cams when they arrive", sorry to say.

You'll see people point to a TSB, a cam kit and so on as if there's the answer, just get that kit. Well, that's the very parts everyone else with this issue is looking for.
And the TSB simply is a way of Jeep telling dealerships "if a customer comes in with this problem, use these parts to fix it". That's pretty much it.
In other words, sorry, no news, for sure nothing reliable - just a lot of opinions on how to speed things up that may or may not hold any water.

Also "proven" engines with lifter tick:

5.7 Hemi

6.4 Hemi

3.5 EB Ford

3.3 EB Ford

5.4 Triton Ford

2.7 EB, less common Ford

7.3 and 6.8 Ford also less common

All that is based off researching this seemingly typical failure mode for maybe a couple weeks, there are without a doubt more.

Look at the actually new platforms, IE Toyota and you'll get a glimpse at real failures that do in fact take out the whole engine and not a $2-3k bill.

Good luck finding that green grass, considering that's just engines with documented cases of lifters or phasers taking out cams and not other drivetrain issues.

I can tell who amongst us was a Subi convert. I had 2 H4s rebuilt at 68k and 80k due to the well known issue with coolant hanging out on the head gaskets. All my Toyotas had bad frame rust within 2 years and for some reason the seemingly 30+ yr issue with the rear mains leaking was still an issue in 2020.

Before anyone gets the idea that I'm defending the 3.6 Im not, Im really just saying we're all busy complaining about something most of us aren't even dealing with, but that seems to be our current reality with just about everything now days. I'd consider that a privilege, to be so frustrated with something we haven't had happen to us. I'll count my graces for every remaining day I get to hear my Grandfather tell me stories about hand loading coal or clearing the coal chute in -20 degree Ohio winters so that they didn't freeze to death over night, at 10yrs old.

In the mean while our Grenadier has been in the shop for a total of 4 months in the 1st year of service due to parts availability delays. We still love it and wouldn't trade it.

Gotta keep our heads up and spirits high.

And...Happy Friday guys.

They should not be allowed to sell new Jeeps or anything with. a 3.6 till the backorders are filled. Think of the millions they are going to save by allowing the warranty expire while waiting for a cam.
