Took my 2022 jeep gladiator for a fishing trip with some family. Trip was 150miles one way, 300 total. Towed my boat with 4 adults in the vehicle total. Boat weighs 2100 lbs loaded with my gear and trailer (put it in a scale to get accurate measurement), well within the towing capabilities of the non tow package jeep gladiator, which is a class 2 hitch rated for up to 3500 lbs. to be honest the bot towed nice. My RPMs were a bit higher but that was to be expected. Up hills I was around 3500 to 4000 at the top end but cruising I was sitting around 1900- 2500 so not bad tall coolant and transmission temps stayed below 200 and oil temp only went up to about 210-215 up one of the large hills I had to climb. All in all it was pretty nice tow.

The question I have is I heard an intermittent high pitch whine sound under the hood. I stopped to scrub bugs off my window because I couldn’t see good. Left the truck running while I scrubbed the window and I heard the sound. I have an audio clip I can play. It only lasts for a few seconds and then would stop for a few seconds and then repeat. I got home late last night so I didn’t investigate it much. This morning i started the truck and it didn’t make the noise. I left it in park and running for about 15 minutes and the sound didn’t happen. Any clue on what this sound is? My truck factory warranty ends on September 16th so I am trying to determine if it something I need to address because I’d rather do it sooner than later. I called the dealership and they said without being able to reproduce it there is nothing they can do. Thanks.

"Intermittent high pitch whine coming from under the hood" you must have a female engine- kidding! :CWL:

Maybe its your belts? You could try and spray some water on it and see if it goes away. But lets see what the pros say.

I never opened the hood. I will say I was driving through an extremely muggy and humid area. It rained before I got to that area and when I was driving through at night there was a bunch of fog and it was pretty humid. I have had a bad belt before and it squeaks more on a rotational sound if that makes since. This is a weird high pitch squeal that last 4 seconds or so and then goes away for a few seconds and come back.

Sorry, but could you explain more detailed please. I’m not familiar.

why was it making it then and only then? Normal under load while trailering or something I need to get replaced? Entire alternator or just pulley? Sorry I just want to know what I’m talking about when/if I can get in to see someone.

Also to be sure we are talking about the same noise. The noise starts at 2 seconds and goes to about 7 seconds and then starts again and at 16 seconds. My inexperienced way of describing it alarmist sounds like an electric mosquito. You have to turn volume up to max to hear it.

Mine makes the same noise. It's the electric power steering pump. Through some searching on here, I found others noting the same noise. If you let the truck sit, it should stop, and you can trigger it again by bumping the steering wheel.
I can't find the thread right now, but someone brought it to their dealer's attention, and they were told it was perfectly normal.

interesting. How long does it last generally? How long to let it sit? haven’t been able to reproduce it. it was just that one time I noticed yesterday after about 3 hours of towing.

like I said. 3 weeks of factory warranty where if anything os crapped out they fix it. I have an extended warranty but I am cheap and don’t like paying deductibles. Lol

Mine makes the noise any time I move the wheel. Goes away after a few seconds of not touching the steering wheel when it's back to center. Starts again as soon as I touch the wheel.

Possibly the wheel was turned some when you were out scrubbing the bug guts off, and was not when you tested in the garage? That would probably explain why you couldn't replicate it. I'd do the same procedure, but have someone turn the wheel while you listen from the front. You should hear it then.

you were spot on. It is electric steering pump. Had my son turn the wheel for me and it started squealing. The only thing I can think of is of was that the wheel was slightly turned and was slowly recentering when I had it in park so it kept making the noise but that is definitely what it is.

I’m assuming normal for the electric pump to make that noise?

If it's not, all three of these trucks I have owned have been abnormal. The current one (which, oddly, is the oldest) SEEMS louder than I recall the others being. But that could just be a byproduct of increasingly not having doors or a roof most of the time.

Regardless, I have never had any issues with the pumps.
