I did not see anything in the highway as it was very dark. Suddenly, I felt a massive hit and the Jeep almost seemed to catch air. Then, there was a sound like a gunshot as the rear tire blew and the whole Jeep was shaking. I pulled over as soon as I could and got out to take a look. The driver side rear fender was hanging off. I changed to the spare. It turns out I had hit a Bosch concrete drill set in a box that must have fallen out of a contractor's truck. Really unhappy about this. I may have to file an insurance claim.

When I worked for Goodyear. Used to see a lot of things that went through the tire, and through the rim.

I would venture that shit falling out of a contractor work trucks is probably the #1 reason for tire and wheel issues on the road.

I ran over a 3/8" ratchet one time that punctured my tire. Wife also got her tire destroyed on the Honda Ridgeline when she swerved attempting to miss a hold down chain that came loose off a construction trailer but caught it enough to rip the outer tire sidewall off and destroy the wheel.

It is hard to put into words how violent this whole episode was, but check this out. It broke through the wheel:

Keep the tool set. It's definitely is a PITA when that stuff happens, especially with the cost and complexity of new stuff today. It's not like the "old days" when I was behind a contractor and a piece of angle iron blew off his pickup and blew back and damaged part of my old '66 Jeepster grill and punched a hole in the radiator (I actually needed one anyway since mine was corroded and leaking a little).

Anyway, I settled on the spot with the guy for $100. I got a new radiator, bent the grill bars back into place with a large pair of pliers and came out about $20 ahead. I know those days are gone.

But checking with your insurance is a good idea. The only thing I would be concerned about would be jeopardizing any discounts you may have with the company if that gets recorded as a "claim" and not simply a "road hazard" thing against your policy. I would check with them first before submitting any information.

Yea one day I ran over a box of sheet metal screws that fell off a contractor’s truck, I had been following out of the development I lived in. Naturally they ruined 3 tires, but I was amazingly lucky an able to limp into a Tire King Store!!! Having to replace 3 GoodYear Wrangler RT 265/70-16, not exactly an outstanding tire that was OEM on my 2019 Colorado. The price for 3 of them was over $700!!! OTD, but the just so happen to have a buy 3 get 4 on Cooper Discover AT, plus had 265/75-16 in stock, all for less than the price of 3 GoodYear Wranglers! That ended up being one of the best tires ever! That is what I’ll get when these Bridgestone Dueler HT are at half worn out. But in 265/75-17 if possible, but at least over 32”.

I was looking at new wheel prices and almost $650 is eye-watering. I see there are a lot of used ones on ebay. I will probably just go that route. I need a tire, too, as it is destroyed from that large puncture.

Check FB marketplace for oem set, might even be able to get a single. I think you could get all 4 take offs with ok tread for $650. Can you just zip tie the flare back on or was there damage to the bed itself?

Had this happen on my Audi with someone's 2" ball hitch. After running it over, the hitch shot out like a rocket, off the highway. (I watched it in my mirror)

Thanks. I am not sure of the amount of damage to the fender flare. Many clips are broken, but I haven't gone beyond that.

Definitely a little bit anecdotal......but the number of folks driving around with nothing but hopes and prayers to secure their expensive tools/machinery has skyrocketed here in the last few years.

I already don't want to be anywhere near dump trucks, but now just seeing a service bed/utlity trailer on a one-lane is an excuse for a quick turn into the nearest corner store for a soda.

I'll just wait it out, thanks.

I have a nice 6ft level that I found on the highway.

Ran over a broken piece of leaf spring with the driver's side front tire with my 2 month old '99 Dodge 4x4. It bounced off the jersey barrier and sliced a nice hole in the bottom part of the rear fender in front of the rear tire.

Our church parking lot has a manhole cover in it for the septic (or something), for some reason someone bolted a piece of bar stock to the cover. Anyways, it was apparently ajar and I drove over it, my tire dropped in, popped the bead and slashed the sidewall, the lid popped up and the bar punched into one of my quarter panels. I managed to roll out of the hole, but that definitely rattled my eye teeth among other things.

I once met a ‘contractor’ driving around with a milk crate full of nails in his truck. No cardboard to be seen, just the crate full of nails. I imagine he spread nails everywhere he drove.
