Can't really camp in the Gladiator without a $10K camper.
Why not?

Smart Cap makes a really nice cap that has a LOT of customization options.. and there's a lot of competitors popping up in this market now because I think Gladiators are actually becoming more trendy for the off road/overland crowd.

My JTRD came with an ARE cap and it's nice, works fine but lacks some mounting capabilities.

I've looked into these used since they go for about 1/2 to 1/3 of the price on marketplace. I like that they are carpeted vs steel. I just haven't been able to find one close enough or one that wasn't well used. I don't want to pay full amount since they can't be sold easily and usually sell for way less than paid. I see lots of them around and most are color matched which unless they standard color they won't sell easily. I only buy things for my Jeep that I know I can sell easily for close to what I paid for the item. I've spent so much money on Jeeps in the last two decades and lost most of it when trying to sell later. Sleeping diagonal is also not ideal at 6'2". Two people and a dog would not be, but possibly doable.

Hi everyone! I'm a member of the JL Forums and have been lurking here for some time. I'm no stranger to Jeeps, have had a TJ, JKs, JKUs, and JLUs at various trim levels. I even explored outside of the brand but found the Toyotas and Hondas I drove, while reliable, lifeless and boring.

I currently drive a 22 JLU Willys with the XR package and Sky One Touch top. I've been very happy with my current ride and bought it with the intent of building it up for family trips, and tackling some beginner-intermediate trails in parks like Rausch Creek and Anthracite. Living in the Northeast, I opted for having a limited slip rear end and having the beefier components from the XR package were a plus. But after this summer, I found I've been wanting more space - having a family quickly fills up the JLU cargo area. I was going to buy a Gobi rack and throw things up there in a cargo box while traveling.

I've always had my eyes on a JT but opted to not get it b/c I live in the city and parking can be a PIA at times. One day I'll be in the burbs but don't know if I can be patient enough to hold out on a JT til then hahaha. Parking is not impossible for a truck, but will definitely be harder during certain times of the day/ night. Lately I've really been getting the itch to trade my JLU in and get a JT but still have reservations... here's why:

- Parking..

- Figure I should wait for the new generation of the Gladiator to come out.. might have a V8 in it lol or get the last year of the JT generation with all the kinks worked out.

- I really like the upgrades I got form the XR package (wide track Dana 44s, 4.56 gears, cast iron knuckles, etc.) and am unsure of which JTs match this. I believe the Rubicon, Mojave, High Altitude, and diesel have the upgraded axles and knuckles but will "only" have 4.10 gearing?

I know that I am the only one who can make this decision but your insights would be greatly appreciated.
Sounds. The Mojave would be best for you. The ride on road trips will be better, plus all the HD enhancements will be like checking off your list. Sure the 4:10 may be lacking? But low range should help. Why is parking so difficult? You can get backup assistance plus have a great camera. Good luck!

That works in certain places and certain times of the year. I want security and protection from animals which means a hard sided camper.
Protection from animals is an illusion. A hungry bear will roll a vehicle door open like a sardine can. It's also completely unnecessary if you're smart about food management. Don't store food in your tent and they won't bother you. Especially if you have dogs. No my 2 dogs won't win a fight with a bear, but that bear is going to avoid that fight altogether unless you do something really dumb like bringing a 5 pound bag of sugar in the tent. Even with the cap the bed is too short for 2 adults and 2 dogs. Not to mention you have to clear everything out of the rig just to go to bed. Setting up my ground tent takes a few minutes and I'm done. People have been hiking/backpacking and car camping in bear country forever (the cars might have been wagons/horses 100+ years ago). And yet you might read about 1 or 2 near attacks a year and every time there's food in the tent.

This! All of it.

Plus, I sleep with protection by my side. I’ve never had to use it. One time in CO, like 29 miles from the nearest paved road, I had a bear come through my campsite in the middle of the night. I was super silent but ready. It lost interest and left. No food in my tent. Somehow my yellow lab and ex wife slept through it.

Thanks for the insight! I should clarify it’s not the act of parking lol. It’s the availability of spots. I’m normally good with timing the work rush when everyone is leaving and coming back so there are spaces available. Sometimes spots will be available but could only fit a normal sized SUV or something smaller like a 2 door Wrangler. Having a 2dr is the dream with parking but everything else is a drawback.

I had a similar experience in CO.. My wife left the avocados out on top of the trailer cabinet and that bear could smell it.

We remained quiet and watched him for a while from the RTT, but black bear really aren't much of a threat at all. Once we got tired of watching him, I yelled "HEY BEAR!" and he ran like hell across the creek and into the forest.

We have a battery powered ring camera that we paired to the starlink and we put that out to watch if any game comes through camp at night. lol it's the best game camera I've ever had because you can watch it live.

Parking the Gladiator is definitely a lot different than a Wrangler. Backing out of a parking spot sucks compared to the Wrangler. I have to think where I park and what amount of space I will have behind me.

I tend to back into parking spots in tighter parking lots. It seems easier to pull out later, than back out.

We've spent many a night in bear country in tents. Several nights were in that one. Never an issue.

The most scared I've ever been was from a bull cow one night. He was stomping and snoring outside our tents for atleast 30 minutes before he finally wondered off. There were 4 tents setup in a line, we were on of the middle ones. The first tent inline was just a few feet from the bull.

I can imagine! I used to have a 2nd Gen Tacoma.. think it was an 08 or 09.. was a dual cab long bed and was cool to drive but had its cumbersome moments. I’m trying to relive and reflect on those times cause looking it up I realized that the JT is only 8 inches shorter in length than my old Taco. The Taco being 226ish” and the JT 218”.

We have both in our family. So, it just depends on what your needs and likes are.
