Here are a few photos of my efforts adapting a cavfab bumper to accept a 2" receiver tube for a removable winch. I can get my hand between the skid plate and the bumper and fit a hitch pin in place fairly easy while avoiding the fog lights. SO no complicated spring load pin system should be needed.

I may have to switch to synth rope and a aluminum fair lead to get rid of that bulky roller fair lead and make they system slightly less pronounced.

Nice, not having to haul 60 plus pounds around all the time is a plus. Another thing is could cut down on a deer vs front end and reduce damage. I do like the look of that bumper too maybe not the finish.

It's raw steel right now, will powder coat black once welding is done.

I found way too many drawbacks to hitch mounting on my old XJ and would never even consider it again. Angled pulls are very hard on it and can easily bend the plate/ mount. Mounted on top of your bumper where the mounting holes are greatly increases approach angle, which is most beneficial on the hardest trails... where you'll likely need the winch. You'll inevitably end up in a situation where you should of had the winch and don't, be it surprise snow storm, muddy job site, or something. Even if you have it in the back, when you need it on a steep muddy hill you'll wonder why it's not just mounted on the bumper. At least that was the the last straw for me.

Thanks for you opinion, but didn't ask for it. I have my systems in place to cover situations I may run into.

By posting on a public DISCUSSION forum... you kinda did. Obviously you're sensitive about your choice for some reason? Sorry if I touched a nerve.

Not sensitive to my choices just annoyed by your I know best attitude you graciacily share here on a daily basis.

Anyone else I would be less bothered, you just hit a nerve.

If sharing my experiences from running a similar setup offend you... that's a you problem (just my opinion of course).

I’d be concerned with approach angle on ledges and coming down off descents. I admire the fabrication for certain terrains and if it hinged up under the hoop maybe. But hey if it works it works. Aint gonna knock it since I haven’t tried it.

I get the concerns, for what i typically do it's fine. If I decided to go on a long adventure or get deep into rocks/steps like Rubicon, I can easily demount the winch from the carrier and just bolt it to the top of the bumper for that adventure to get my clearance back.

Just need to know your use case.

With the receiver mount in the bumper I can also now hook up a multitude of receivers to the front as well, like if I had to wrestle a trailer around i can now push it using a standard hitch.

I have a come along in a bin in the back and a hi-lift jack and lots of straps and some cable if i get into trouble and don't have the winch with me. But as a rule if i'm going into dirt i bring the winch.

I have since removed the roller fairlead and now use a yakum grooved fairlead and synthetic rope. The Yakum fairlead is considerable less deep.

I'll try to take a updated photo soon.

That’s good practice. For a trailer I bet that makes things hella easy to move around. I’ve helped neighbors park trailers tight using my bucket in the same way. We had a guy get into trouble East of Yuma on the ridges and we were glad some people brought come alongs and stuff for that one. That was a DICEY recovery!!

This would be the logical conclusion for a dedicated rig or rock crawler with a high percentage probability of needing to use a winch and time was a factor. but I am projecting based on his response that he is using his rig with a much lower percentage of probability of using the winch and/or time is not a factor.
I’m guessing that is the base where the disconnect in responses comes from. the rest is just “normal internet stuff”

cheers 🍻🍿
