I’ve read some post that members left that said if you want your jeep to last 100-300k miles don’t F with the engine.

I was wondering if that includes installing a cold air intake?

If not, does anyone have a recommendation on a CAI?

Any mods to any factory engine can increase the odds of having issues at some point. I think driving habits and routine maintenance are the key to longevity.
Now this forum and thousands of others like this one will each have a myriad of topics of how you can improve the power and/or longevity of what ever engine that forum discusses. The opinions and results vary greatly.
That being said I don’t think a cold air intake will shorten the life of the 3.6 if maintained properly. Full disclosure… I have a Rough Country CAI only because I really wanted a washable reusable filter and found the RC CAI on FB Market place brand new for less money then I could get a K&N filter that would fit a stock ai system. There have been no noticeable gains in hp or mpg.

Ditto what @MyMojave said.

There's a ton of info here and on the JLU forums about the Pentastar and its ups and downs. They've made 2M+ of them and most issues are at this point very well known and fixes exist.

The best thing you can do for your motor is to properly maintain it and don't beat the tar out of it, keep revs in the sub-3K range.

Change your oil at 5K mile intervals and send a sample to Blackstone regularly to see whats going on inside. Use the best oil you can afford and get a high quality filter. Personally I use Liqui Moly.

If the cold air intake and filter does not add performance the only reasons would be you like the sound it makes, The looks of it under the hood, to connect a snorkel that requires that filter system or to not buy disposable filters it would take a lot of throw aways to equal most cold air intakes. The K&N washable filter costs about the same as a few throw away filters and can be cleaned although i do not know if you would want to do any more than tap or blow the debris out of it on the trail if it was dirty or dusty and you can do that to a throw away the only issue is does a washable filter clean the air as well as a throw away. The banks filter looks like it has a lot more flow due to size always had good experiences with Banks stuff do not know if would be any benefit except taking longer between servicing it unless you run the engine wide open a lot will the airflow increase be any benefit otherwise do not know.

I personally prefer the stock air box for its water resistance, but if you really want one without concern over warranty issues, there is a Mopar Performance one available

I concur with most of this; Change oil early, follow the owners manual for extreme service. Now for IMO.. Drive it like you stole it, Hammer if you choose to. My experience is GO WOT to the redline out of the dealership lot; this will expose any issue that warranty would cover.

As for Oil analysis, what would you do if it comes back funky? Change the oil filter and oil again. spend more on more analysis OR engine tear down?

AGREE with this = "Use the best oil you can afford". .

BTW over 32 yrs of being provided company vehicles and replacing them every 10K miles only had 2 engines fail and 1 transmission. And I do know the cause of all 3 fails.

Ignore the comment about keeping revs below 3k,the motor was designed to Rev and make power above 4k. This is not some 1960's American v8

Well here’s something you’ll never hear, except you’ll hear it now,… always preheat your engine before you start it. This apparently is the secret to million mile engines. Question is, will the rest of the truck keep up?🧐

Humour me and watch the video. There’s other videos with lab analysis to prove preheating engine cuts wear metals in half.

@silverbillet that there is a controversial one here. Lots of opinions. Some say OEM. Some say Castrol, Mobil One, Amsoil or an imported specialty oil like LiquiMoly.

And smart asses will tell you extra virgin olive oil with a little grape seed oil added to raise the smoke point.

Anytime you ‘F’ with anything can cause premature wear & tear.
And actually….. even if you leave it alone can also result in premature wear & tear.

Of all the parts & pieces that make up your Jeep…parts coming from all over the world….. You’re at the mercy of quality on everything. Did the engineers design these vehicles to last for 20 years? Kinda like appliances… you’re lucky to get 8 years out of anything anymore.

Do your maintenance…… install whatever modifications you want to install (within common sense - NO hack jobs) … and enjoy it!!!

Some folks upgrade & beat the piss out of their rigs and never have any problems, while other folks baby their rigs and have all sort of problems.

Throw the dice up in the air and where they land is where they land.

As for a CAI….back in 2003, I had one on my 2004 Dodge Ram. Hated it (CAI)..... I took it off. Lost lots of low-end toque and the truck was better without it.
