That is a nice truck if you are looking for one always wonder how something like that exists. They did put in those V8 eventually In 62 it had 140 HP 6 just what was wanted for work trucks. Later they added the V8 327 250HP, Buick 350 another 230 HP, The AMC 360 175 to 195 HP sad days for power, similar to a later 4.0 liter six power output but way ahead of the tractor like 4.2. Finally near the end they added the 401 in 1974 brought it to 330 HP they also added Quadra Trac as an option. They did have some fancy packages. I wonder what that state of the art 401 mill weighed back then to produce that power? They did do better at designing engines with good stump pulling low end torque and longevity but often with the handicap of a narrow low RPM power band.

Both of the full size J-Trucks I have were bought because of these engines. The bit of extra HP in that AMC Vigilante is fine and all.....but I definitely have a bit of nostalgia for the Buick. It was a hassle trying to adapt pulleys/accessories from other BOP motors of the era, but I am a straight sucker for that Dauntless V8 badge on the fender.

In a fantasy world, I'd have the current truck (in the profile pic) with that motor. Carb and all. I only use 4 gears in the Aisin anyway. Would happily go back to the old 4 speed.

I had a 1964 gladiator j200 w/7’ bed. put a caddy 472 big block in it w/turbo 400 trans and Dana 20 transfer case. Original motor was a 230 tornado w/3 on the tree.

Love the old FSJ's. My dad had 3 and I had 1 plus 3 Grand Wagoneers, 1 Cherokee, and 1 Cherokee Chief.

My 88' GW had a swapped in 401 and 30 gallon fuel tank. It was on 33's and got like 11 mpg. It was glorious. 😄

A V8 and a real manual transmission and clutch. Maybe the last jeep engineers should take notes on building a real jeep drivetrain.
