True with the rack on you would lose the convertible top. A sun roof could be an option on the front cab. However you would gain side compartment storage.

That's exactly what I'm hoping to find... at least one side with a compartment.

Can you do that one in bright white?

The rack would be a frame. And on the frame it would have multiple mounting points for the cross bars like my photoshop drawings above.

Roof Height:

Tent Height:

I could see that working ... vertical supports that are full height, just with different mounting point heights. One concern would be whether the tops of the vertical supports would get in the way of a RTT mounted to cross rails at the lower setting.

My thought would be something like you see in this picture. But, each vertical support would be a pair of vertical pieces that bolt together. They'd overlap just enough at the cab-top height to provide the needed strength, and overlap almost completely at the lower setting for a RTT.

Height adjustment would be awesome... but I think not very practical - for this style of rack.

Consider just some of the questions:
  • How do you adjust the height? (each vertical support is a pair of supports that overlap & connect at different points depending on desired height)
  • Is that assisted with hydraulics or motors?
  • (Nope)
  • What holds the weight during adjustment? (Not an on-the-fly adjustment ... decide what you're gonna need for the weekend & adjust it to suit before packing. Though, most people would leave it at a particular setting most of the time.)
  • Can there be any extra weight during adjustment? (Not the way I see it)
  • If it's manual, how do you move the posts? (Unbolting, lifting or lowering, then rebolting)

You could also do a utility bed like this past EJS concept:

Imagine it with a roof top tent instead of the black rails and part the slopes up to the top of the cab.

The problem is that any rack that sits below the front cab would have to hang behind the tailgate since you have less then a 6 ft bed

OR have the rack start right after the freedom panels like on evos build.

I'm not sure that I understand. There are currently 'low sitting' bed racks available for midsize trucks with short beds.

Sorry what I meant to say that the roof top tent would need to hang over if you use the hardshell tent. A fold up would fit but they are pretty tall. It would also obstruct your view out the rear window and eat up more storage space

Maybe it's just me but all the above, great concepts all, are missing something... maybe adding something fun for the softops?
