Does Tru-lok have any sort of auto LSD feature?

I’ve been looking at Overland vs Rubicon for a truck which will primarily be an on-road vehicle.

I’m in the Northeast and have icy roads in the winter.

I know both trim levels will have BLD, but the Overland offers trac-lok LSD vs the Tru-lok on the Rubicon.

I know every “trailhead” sings the praises of a locking differential, but I’m just curious if the Tru-lok system offers any sort of automatic LSD functionality (front or back) beyond BLD.

I just like to know I have something (automatically) assisting me on low-speed ice patches in the winter.

It is my opinion that the BLD/traction control system is more effective than ANY traction device on snow or ice. Most traction devices cause the inner tire to break traction during cornering. BLD/traction control accounts for the proper speed differential during cornering, avoiding breaking traction.

Anyone know how the trac-lok LSD system (available on Overland) works with BLD? Do they just each try to do what they think is right in tandem? Or does adding trac-lok cancel out the BLD system?

The Trac-lock LSD is a clutch pack. It’s pretty much the same as it has been for decades. They would enhance each other when beneficial, but the minor drawback isn’t going to be negated much by the BLD/traction control. For off road, they do help, but not to the extent of a true locker.

The Trak-Lok has clutches that are under the side gears inside the carrier. They bind up and react to heat and does let torque go out to both wheels/tires pretty much equally. The axles are splined to the side gears. The Limited Slip part is when go around bends, it overpowers the clutches and they slip so the inside and out side tires can rotate at different speeds during turns. A true locker has a system that locks the whole inside of the carrier together. The spider and side gears are locked to the carrier and turned by the ring gear all together.
Everything is locked to the axles and there is no slip nowhere. Your only supposed to use a locker like 4WD. On loose (more slippery) surfaces. So there is give under the tires so you don’t bind things up on turns. You know how it feels if you put it in 4WD in a dry parking lot and try and go in circles!!! It binds up.
Anti-lock braking control uses speed sensors at each wheel and the ECU monitors all 4 wheels speeds. If it sees a difference in speeds during braking it assumes that the wheel with the lower speed signal is locking up. So it cuts the brake pressure to that wheel waiting for the speed to come back to that of the others. During traction control it sees a difference in speeds and it applies the brakes to that wheel with the faster speed assuming it is spinning.
So, if you want to take a run at a snowy hill and you know the wheels will spin as your accelerating Turn off ABS/Traction control because the computer sees you going, and the wheels at different speeds. It puts on the brakes trying to get control of wheel spin and counter acts what you are trying to do. Basically you trying to go like hell and the computer is slamming on the brakes, saying I got this. And you wonder why you didn’t have any power and got stuck 3/4 of the way up.
FCA will only build Trak-Lok in an automatic trans. Don’t understand why, but that is the way it was when I ordered mine. I couldn’t get it, I built a 6 speed. But that might have changed or will in the future.
I’d go with a Trak-Lok and standard ABS/Traction control. You’ll be fine. It’s a JEEP!
True Lockers are strictly for off-road.

Tru-Lok and LSD haven't been available together since the TJ Rubicon 2003-2006.

The new BLD system works fantastic and as mentioned I'd rather have it than LSD any day of the week. LSD sucks on icy roads. It tries to push the rear of the vehicle sideways. Very dangerous. For deep, wet snow LSD might be somewhat beneficial, but for most wintry conditions LSD does more harm than good. Better off with open diffs and BLD so you can keep the vehicle moving straight and have traction to all four tires when you need it.

I have my manual trans overland ordered but the trac-lok seems to be preventing from getting out of “d”. I ordered it with the trac-lok thinking it would be beneficial in the nasty winter road conditions of northern Indiana. Now I’m wondering if I should call the dealer and take off the trac-lok....

How did you find out it was the trac-lok causing the delay?

the dealer said it was showing up with pop ups saying something like “low allocation” for the trac-lok when I placed the order in 9/18.

Oh, that’s a drag. I submitted my Gator order on 9/24 with trac-lok. I just hope it comes in before the end of the year.

Blue manual trans might be different, who knows
