Isn't there magnesium in the hood and tailgate? From my understanding that stuff lights up right nice.

Is there a extinguisher that can handle a magnesium fire?
Honda RA302, "The deadliest car" body made of magnesium.

Aluminum in car bodies mostly & low carbon steel. Race cars use the exotic materials. In the 70’s & 80’s Indy car wheels just ignite when they skim the walls on oval tracks. Magnesium rims. Hence the name ā€œMag wheelsā€ a decent amount of magnesium in the structure. It’s strong and lightweight. It literally ignites!
I’d imagine it’s too expensive for exterior body panels. BUT I’m sure there is a decent amount in sub-structures and components.

If you have no other info than what is posted here why post in the warranty forum? Why assume the truck was turned off? Why shame FCA as the one at fault before the facts are known?
True. There are all kinds of wild possibilities ... cooling fan disabled during an electrical mod, radiator punctured during off-roading then driving with no coolant, tapping the shifter into manual 3rd gear on the entrance ramp and driving at 70mph.

The event piques my curiosity for sure!

Sorry, I assumed the truck was turned off due to the description of the events from the guy whose truck it was. I was basing my post not on other random people's posts in this thread, but on the actual owner's description of what happened on his Instagram feed. To again quote the owner of the burned up JT:

Out of no where vehicle lost power and dash informed me to pull over and will shut off soon. Within a few minutes of pulling over smoke and flames started.
The way I read that, the truck lost most of its power and warned him it was about to shut off. He pulled over and shut it off or it shut itself the rest of the way off. A few minutes later it burst into flames. Is that not how you read his words? I'll admit I'm filling in some gaps, but not that many. And I didn't shame FCA per se, I literally said "here's hoping it was a one off fluke". I'm really hoping it was bad wiring on of his modifications, but it's a pretty new vehicle that shut down and burst into flames like it was a Tesla after a love tap, and that's absolutely terrifying for all of us. While talk of fire extinguishers is great, it's also not something a brand new vehicle owner should have had to worry about while driving down the road and not getting in an accident. So yeah, I stand by my "Not cool, FCA, not cool...." comment. As someone who already ordered their JT, I'm praying that it's not a systemic issue, but it should still put a bit of the fear of god in all us owners and future owners

I wouldn't worry about reports of one vehicle catching on fire. It happens (a fluke, as you say).

Now, if we started hearing multiple reports - then I'd worry.

A lot more information surrounding the incident needs to be released before everyone gets hysterical. I agree with what's said multiple reports of this then there would be reason for concern.

I own a JTR LE and I feel just as safe driving it as I did prior to learning about this unfortunate event.

I'd like to think because the JT is very similar to the JL incidents like this would have been reported with that vehicle as well. I've heard none to speak of.

I feel bad for the owner in this situation and am glad no one was hurt. This will be investigated and hopefully they can find the root cause.

This isn't nearly as troubling as when the BSG JLs were catching on fire in storage lots. The electrical system on a JT is nothing new, meaning most of the components are designed to established standards/practices, reviewed for function and layers of FMA.
The winch was installed 7 weeks ago. It came off his old jeep (where it hadn't caused any problems) but obviously the wiring was new. maybe the hot lead (huge, unfused, unswitched wire) got piched somewhere and finally wore through. I had that happen about 20 years ago on a Bronco- coming home from a sand dune trip, everything (but ignition) shut down. Found the cable pinched/chafed through under the (ancient, over stressed) battery tray. just in time... and after I had already cut other cables to save the smoldering truck.
