So my dealer tried to keep me from making a mistake. Although I didint understand it at the time. He tried selling me a loaded up sport s that had max tow. And I sold him on why I only needed a hitch.

Now wanting to put 37” on but only having 3.73 gears. What kind of damage am I looking at down the road to fix that? I have some installers telling me you just need to recalibrate the ecm since you have the 8 speed auto. I haven’t gotten the tires yet but the 3.5 lift is going on.

What would you do jump to 35s until you can afford regear and some 37s?

roll those stocks until you can afford the regear and 37?

Hell with it run 37 and eventually you will find the money to regear because you ain’t got no more gears?

Some are running 37's with 3:73 gears with 8 speed auto. You can technically do it, but you have a few things to worry about. One would be the smaller transmission cooler on the non Max Tow and the real crappy MPGs you will be getting on 37's. I ran 35's on my JKU that had 3:73 gears and it was a slug. The 8 speed will help, but I would also consider a larger transmission cooler and a regear if you go to 37's, at least 4:10 gears but 4:56 would be better.

You probably should of listened to dealer on this one. I know a few running 37's on their Max tow and have saw very minimal performance losses. I'll be moving to 37's once my 35's wear out. Your going to be looking at around $1200-$1500 to regear and probably another $300 for the larger transmission cooler.

If it was me I'd run 35's until you can afford a regear unless in the next few months you can get it regeared. I know guys who have replaced their transmissions at under 60,000 miles because of running larger tires and the strain it can put on the transmission.

So question on that I got the Popular equipment package on my sport s and it had a trailer tow package which I thought was only a difference in the Wide Axles and the 4.10 gears oh and anti spin dif. I should have the engine cooler.

Well I mean I havent had a jeep in 10 years and my last was a 1994 Jeep Cherokee.

I only think the Max tow comes with the upgraded transmission cooler, I could be wrong. I know my old JKU had a Tow Package on it but it didn't have a larger transmission cooler.

Yeah I just looked it up as well. It also will say it on your window sticker, just looked at mine and it had it on there. I guess the only difference is the 4:10 gears and the wider axles and the 3,000lb towing capacity difference. You should fine with a regear then. Ask @Gregbj33 he's running a sport with 3:73 on 37's and says he loves it.

Who knows I had side steps on my Gladiator and they were not on the sticker or invoice and that is how it came.

20 sport s 6spd
EDIT: I have a 6-speed manual

i have a sport s with 3.73 and on 35's with 28 lb wheel and 62 lb tire it was just fine, a little stall prone in 4wd high in some deeper snow but easily livable, 4lo is not hard to find, essentially a 5 speed which isn't a bad thing

i've since gone back to stock 23 lb wheels and up to 82 lb 37x12.5's...it's a dog, basically a 4 spd, i know the rpm i want on the highway in 6th gear, 4.88's would be the furthest i'd want to go, about 2400 rpm at 75 mph (120 km/h), most seem to go to 4.88's with 37's and i should be putting 4.88's in this week if the parts show up, they should be at 4wp today or tomorrow

i get around in the city just fine, it's pretty lazy, don't have to shift a lot, i might miss that, but looking forward to some grunt and some more shifting, i'm sure when i pull my 3000 lbs of trailer i'll be much happier with the 4.88's also

i think you will be just fine as you may be happier with 4.88's than 4.10's anyway, do the re-gear, don't worry about the rest

Definitely report back. Kind of curious to know how much MPG's and overall performance you regain, and your towing ability improvement with 4.88's and 37's with the 8-spd auto. Granted, I'd be going from 4.10's to 4.88's so with you going from 3.73's to 4.88's, your performance should be a must more drastic one, but i'm still curious to know how well the transmission performs with the 37's and 4.88 combo on the highway at around 75-80 MPH, and on backroads at 55-60 MPH.

Thanks

Doesn't max tow also have larger brakes? I could've sworn that was the case....
