I have the standard tow package, auto trans and 3.87 gearing rated at 4500 lb max on my 2020 Sport S..Would that be adequate to tow an Airstream Basecamp (4300lb) while touring the country fulltime in retirement?..Of course I'd like to to tour the Rockies etc:..The dealer told me it would be $4k to convert to max tow package!..I'm just starting to research this so any help would be appreciated..

You would be pushing it towing 4300lbs with it continues like that touring the country. I would of thought the conversion to Max tow would be more than $4,000. They have to swap front and rear axles, HD wider axles, rear springs, alternator and I may missing some things but just the axle swap seems like it would be costly.

On stock tires up to rubicon stock tires it will do it just fine. Get the curt echo bluetooth brake controller and away you go. It won't be ideal but it will work. If that's your dry trailer weight and you haven't added all your gear/fluids/toys then it's gonna be a workout no doubt and may be a struggle. Rent a truck for the vacay perhaps. This sort of homework you do before you buy lol.

Edit, retirement full time touring? Ya you bought the wrong truck. Even with max tow, still have to add brake controller and i'd wire one in for that amount of use. You should have considered the GM Twins with the little Duramax Diesel, or any of the half ton diesels. Or waited for the Gladiator Diesel.

While it would be expensive to upgrade to the MaxTow package, the 6000lb rating with the std. tow package only has minimal differences- proper hitch (no more than $300 from Mopar), bigger fans (they don't make it pull any better) and the bigger alternator to run them. Stay conservative on you electrical loads (use shore power to keep trailer batteries charged) and don't insist on running up grades at WOT in 100F heat- you'll be FINE.

Plus the wider axles as well and different rear springs in the Max Tow

Yes, but the equipment that gets you the 6000lb rating of the std tow package is minimal. You don’t need the bigger fans unless you plan to pull full weight in high heat. Everything else is up to pull 6k. Wider axles and 4.10s are not needed for that.

Where do you get 6,000 for the standard tow package on a Sport??
Plus he's talking Rockies.
That Sport is LIGHT. I'd not try it myself.
My Overland struggles with an empty trailer.
It's more than axles, ratios. Vehicle weight counts, tires, wheels, and yes, cooling, especially in the mountains with a trailer that heavy.
For a sport the maximum towing with all the towing stuff is 4,500 not 6,000.
He can't get 6,000 on a Sport. Even with the bells and whistles the max for a Sport is 4500 so where the heck you getting 6,000 out of one?
I've never try it - by the time he puts another person in there, loads up food, WATER, whatever, he's be maxed out, then trying to pull the hills or mountains? Cooling was pushing it anyway, Jeep had to pull out all the stops to keep these things cool.

Please show me where a Sport S equipped with all of the standard towing stuff is going to handle 6,000 pounds -

Ok, found it in the owner manual/
But knowing how my Overland, a heavier vehicle, handles my trailer, I'd never try 6,000 in a Sport S. Especially with any hills.
That gear ratio sucks for towing in hills. Frankly I'd never tow over 5,000 in mine with that ratio. It struggles. I can imagine it would get pretty hot. (the transmission constantly hunting for one thing)

I agree. My buddies 3.73 Sport struggled with 4500lbs of rock and trailor behind his. I towed the same Amount a week after he did in my Max tow and it did great. I wouldn't want to tow 4500+ for an extended period of time, definitely wouldn't do it to tour the country.

My Sport S did not come with even the basic Tow package. I replaced the bumper based setup with the Gladiator Trailer Hitch Receiver. That will not impact the official tow rating but according to the Jeep Dashboard it is rated for 5017 lbs Max Towing.

Where are you getting the 4500lbs from. I would think mine would be on the low end of the rating. I have the Automatic but maybe something in some of the extra safety features or other options on mine ups it a little. The GVWR on the door is 5800lbs.

I am well above the boats I intend to pull but I would like to know how much RV I could pull if that ever comes up.

This chart from the owners' manual ......
Pay attention to the lines for the Sport S automatic transmission - you do not have the tow package!
You have a hitch, not the package. The tow package includes better cooling/alternator, etc.
Also pay attention to the frontal area - that's the maximum area a trailer can have - if it's 7 feet wide by 7 feet tall, it's 49 sq ft - they show 40, for example.
You are limited to 4500 pounds.

Wow, did I F up buying this Gladiator?.. Since buying it a year ago, I have this dream of retiring in an RV, either small motorhome or a tow behind with the Jeep..The Airstream is fully "loaded" at 4300lbs, (so they say..water, fuel, oil, excess shit) and yes, need to be mobile on a daily basis if I decide to do this..So even if I had the max tow package (7650lbs), you think the Gladiator would be up for the daily driving like this?..and to think I traded in a '17 Ram for this!..:)

I think the Max Tow or Rubicon could handle it. Different gearing, different setups, both built for off road and towing in mind. The 3.73 gearing in the regular sports are going hurt you but softer springs and other stuff have to be taken into account as well. Don't take this the wrong way but you should of probably researched it a little better before buying.
