Took delivery of my 2020 Gladiator today and drove 35 miles home. When I got home I noticed oil leaking. Drops in a 4' diameter under it. The engine oil pan and transmission pan are clean and dry. The oil seems to be coming from between the transmission and the transfer case. Its an almost clear oil, that lookslike vegitable oil, slightly yellow on a paper towel but has a green tint dripping from the skidplate. There is oil dripping from this point and slathered on everthing underneath from there back. I called my sales rep and he told me not to drive it and that they would send a tow truck in the morning for it. I am pretty pissed off but know its not the dealerships fault. I am concerned that I could have done damage driving it 35 miles if it ran out of oil in the transfer case. It also a brand new vehicle with 41 miles. I am not sure how I feel about them having to drop half the drivetrain from a brand new vehicle and try to replace gaskets. Would expecting a replacement vehicle of the same options be unreasonable? How would you handle this?

I would determine my vehicle exchange pending on how deep they have to go into the jeep to fix the leak. I can tell you from experience that the build happens without a cab on the frame, so all the little holders etc. for wires and hoses will probably not be back in their original spots or clamped previously like off the assembly line.

I would push for whatever makes you happy in the end. Jeep needs to make it right and they should eat the cost no matter what.. Would you have your new TV repaired or demand a new one? or would you have bought it if you found it leaking after the test drive?

Nope, I would demand a new TV. No I would not have bought it if I found it leaking after a test drive.

It depends on the laws of the state where you live. In Nevada, once you sign on the line, you're stuck with it. You have to rely on the dealer to fix it, or the Lemon Laws to get it replaced. The dealer might be agreeable to a replacement. I would ask that upfront, and then see what the leak is and what a repair involves.

You don't know yet what is leaking. Is it trans or transfer case lube, or coolant? It is a mess now, but how much actually was lost? I'd give the dealer a chance to answer those questions.

Dealer is sending a roll back to pick it up today and is delivering me a comparable loaner. Hope to know more later today or early tomorrow.

Update:

my JT has been at the dealership all week and they have identified the issue as a bad transfer case output shaft seal. The part has been ordered and is expected to arrive tomorrow. I’ve been told I’ll have my Jeep back on Monday.

Couple of thoughts:
1. If this is all that was wrong I am ok with the dealer replacing the bad seal and going on down the road.
2. I’m a bit pissed that the dealer hadn’t communicated with me worth a damn, ive had to call them and wait on hold or get transferred 2-3 times before I can get any updates. If my salesman thinks he’s getting a 10 on a survey from me he better pick up his game. I shouldn’t have to be the one doing all the leg work here.
3. I told the service guy I expect the undercarriage to be clean enough to eat off of, as it was went I bought it. My garage floor is coated and I don’t want residual oil dripping from the undercarriage because they were too lazy to clean up the mess after replacing the seal. We’ll see how well they do on this point Monday.
That’s where things stand for now. I’ll update when I have more news.

I agree w your process. Unusual for the output shaft seal to fail, and unusual that it had 40+ miles and no symptoms. As long as no deformities/scratches etc. on the shaft, a seal replacement should be fine.

Liquor Attorney. So not all bad...
OP - how is your vehicle doing after the initial hiccup? Was it really just a bad seal?

Yup. It now has 1500 miles on it and hadn’t leaked a drop since. The dealership service dept did a great job cleaning all traces from the undercarriage. Literally like it never happened. I have zero complaints.
