To add to the confusion, COMMON tires are between 10 and 12.5” wide. Anything beyond an 11” (285mm) will technically require a wider than stock wheel. The bulk of after market wheels out there will fit tires from 285mm/11” to 315mm/12.50” wide reasonably well. The wheel offset will determine where the tire sits. Back spacing will drive you nuts, because a 8.5 and 10” wide wheel might have the same offset(for the same poke, scrub radius, tire clearance, etc) but have way different back spacing. Hope some of that helps.You should have an idea of width before picking rims, because that's going to impact it a lot.
