They know they are in the wrong, which is why they didn't give you any fuss.

I can't verify this story to be true, but I've only heard of one gen 3 engine failure. The guy posted in the 3rd gen EcoDiesel Facebook group. He claimed that his engine failed somewhere around 26,000 miles due to the dealer putting in T6. Take it for what it's worth, but that's what he claimed. The dealer had to pay for the cost since it was their fault.
I actually thought about leaving it for a moment... but then thought better.

You caught it just in time. I live in diesel country, so our dealer diesel techs are actually pretty good. Unfortunately, dealers don't let their diesel techs change oil, so usually someone young or low on the totem pole gets that job. As you've experienced, not everyone in dealer service departments are competent.

I’m battling with my dealership since they used Rotella T6 and then the service manager has the nuts to say that the Mopar Max Pro oil (68231020AA) is Rotella T6. Here is the exchange after the phone call and in person conversation:

Matt,
The file that you sent me states:

We recommend you use 5W-40 synthetic engine oil such as Mopar Max Pro oil (68231020AA) that meets FCA Material Standard MS- 12991 and the API SN engine oil category is required.

Shell Rotella T6 does not meet this requirement. This is what a Shell representative told me yesterday:

If the vehicle calls for a product that meet MS 12991. Our Rotella product will NOT work in the application. The only product we have that meets the spec is the Pennzoil Platinum Euro SAE 5W-40 Full Synthetic Motor Oil

I still don’t understand why you’re saying that Rotella T6 oil is safe and meets FCA’s requirements.

David,
The part number specified there is the Rotella T6 part number

Thank you,

Matt,
I disagree and refer you to page 21 & 23 of the 2021 Mopar dealership Vehicle Lubricant & Chemical Catalog. Mopar has different part numbers for both Mopar MaxPro 5w40 (68231020AA) oil and Rotella T6 (68001332PC) oils.

Again, the Shell representative has stated that Rotella T6 DOES NOT meet the MS-12991 requirements that FCA has required for the Gen 3 ecodiesel.

I don’t understand why as a customer I need to explain this to a dealership. I personally feel that you are only using Rotella T6 due to it being much cheaper oil than the required Mopar oil.

I am requesting that my oil be drained and replaced with the Mopar oil that is approved for my engine. This is what should have been done on Monday’s visit. I have also submitted this issue to FCA for their response on the matter.

David

I would ask to talk to the General Manager. I bet that he/she will take care of your issue ASAP.

I‘m planning to visit them tomorrow and I’ll ask to speak to the General Manager. It‘s frustrating to say the least.

Keep us updated. I can't believe your service advisor is still denying that they made a mistake. My dealer does everything by the book. There's no way they would recommend Rotella T6 in the gen III Ecodiesel.

After another visit and discussion with the dealership the service advisor finally admitted that they were wrong in using Rotella T6 oil and changed the oil to the MaxPro that is requires.

It definitely is a PITA that the dealers themselves don't know the difference... and have to be told be the consumer.

I agree. Though painful, I’m glad to have it done correctly. I feel for those who don’t know or pay attention and just accept it.

At least you got it taken care of. I'm a very laid back person and don't want the drama in my life, but sometimes you have to be firm or people will take advantage of you.

I have the same personality but also will go the extra step to prove my point if I am correct. This can sometimes be a bad thing too.
