Hi All - Hoping to get some help. I have a '21 Willys about to add my Teraflex leveling kit. If I wanted to keep the stock 17's and just go to a larger tire, what size would you recommend. Can you run a 33 on the stock 17's, I think they are only 7.5 wide. I was also looking at a 295/70-17. Do I need to add any type of spacer? Anyone got some recommendations? Thanks!

The Rubicon stock wheels are the exact same size, and come with 33's, so yes, you can run 33s on the stock rim. They come with 285/70/17 Falken Wildpeaks MTs or ATs. I'd check the classifieds. Someone is always selling some.

I put 315 70s on my stock Sport S rims. No spacer. 2.5" RC levelling kit. No issue. Full rack clears by about a half inch. So, you can easily throw on 33s without problems.

17x7.5 are not designed to take a tire larger than 285/70r17 (33s). I noticed some people saying they have done so without issue so try at your own risk. I won't pretend to know what those risks are.

I bought brand new alloy wheels that were 17"x 8.5" (standard wheels of mine were 17x 7.5) and they had the right offset to keep from rubbing for $50ea. Spacers are $100 (roughly) so why waste your time. I'm good all the way up to 40's now, but currently running 37's on a 4.5" lift. Now for gearing, ha ha. One thing leads to another. and the way prices are for tires, I'm keeping the 34" tires on the stock wheels to put on at the end of wheeling season. Buy once, cry once.

Not true.

Discount tire has a whole slew of 17” tires and 33”+ and 12.5” wide that are perfectly fine.

If you don’t believe me, go look on their website.

Please don’t post something as fact unless you actually know it is a fact.

here is just one example:

So really I could go up to a "true" 33 at 33x12.5 and be fine. Not need spacers or anything?

You should be but I’m not 100%. Discount tire will test fit for you.

On a rubicon, Mojave, or other JT with wide track axles, yes.

Thank you. I just don't want something that sticks out and throws rocks and stuff all over my paint. A little would be fine, but rather have them about flush if possible. Trying to avoid spacers. Maybe Ill stick with the 285/70-17 just to be safe. I don't do any hard wheeling, mostly a DD and the occasional adventure.I would like to go to the a/T though, the stock Firestone M/T are a little noisier than I would like.

Actually tire manufacturers are okay with fitting 295 on a 7.5-inch wide rim. https://tiresize.com/tiresizes/295-70R17.htm

Having said that, my understanding is that JLs and JTs will start rubbing with anything wider than 285 tires, unless you add spacers or increase offset.

Fact: Discount tire’s website is wrong Nitto 35x12.5x17 are not rated to be installed on 7.5” wide rims. Check Nitto’s info on their site.
There are no 35x12.5x17 tires that are rated to be mounted on stock 7.5” rims.

Got it. That's what I was assuming in the research I was doing, but figured I could get a more clear and direct answer here, this is my first Jeep so I am still learning.

Not true at all and discount tire has a chart to go by that says you can mount up to a 37 12.5 17 on a 17x7.5 wheel. If you couldn't do it safely they wouldn't do it.

That's their chart

Mine that they mounted 37 12.5 17's on

If you got the wide axle's like on the max tow and Rubicon's you will not run. A 12.5" wide tire will rub the lower control arms at full lock without spacers on non wide axle JTs
