I think your correct. The big bronco is going to win over many Jeep fans. It’s an impressive vehicle. For me, I wouldn’t consider it an option. I think it will take many years for the bronco to have the same aftermarket support and event’s to match Jeep. They probably will never be able to match in those categories. I’ve had nothing but bad experiences with two ford’s over the past 9 year’s. I have a 2020 Mustang sitting at the dealership right now(3 weeks). It seems like the more tech they put in, the more often it goes to the shop.
I agree with the aftermarket remark and the time it will take to get the aftermarket support the JL/JT has.

However, the best overall treatment I’ve had from a dealer was from my local Ford dealer. That’s not to say my local CDJR dealer *service* department treated me poorly. On the contrary, they treated me very well. But Ford treated me better as a whole dealership/ownership total experience. My local CDJR dealer’s sales dept couldn’t compete with pricing from another dealer further away, and (it seems) no CDJR dealer can provide me with a loaner vehicle. And when they provided me with the rental, at no time did I ever get a truck. I understand they have no control over it because they outsourced it to Hertz, but that’s beside the point. I should have been provided a Mopar truck.

(Texas DPS lemon law states (one of four ways to get a lemon determination):
30-day test
You pass the 30-day test if your vehicle has been out of service for repair because of a defect covered by the original factory warranty:

  • For a total of 30 days or more - not necessarily all at one time - during the first 24 months or 24,000 miles (if a comparable loaner vehicle was provided while the vehicle was being repaired, that time does not count toward the 30 days) a substantial defect still exists.
)
And for the 75-80% of JL drivers (and possibly JT drivers when the bronco truck comes out) who are probably not beholden to a particular brand, dealership experience can hold a lot of the buyer decision space.

Simply a modified CUV Ford Escape.
True. But modified with more suspension travel and 29" tires. So its not nothing.
Its also got an excellent brake based traction control system. Not as good as a locking diff, but better than a limited slip.

The point is like others have said, you need to know the limitations of your vehicle. Also a little skill doesn't hurt.

I used to participate in "drink and sink Sunday" with a group of friends when I was younger. It was usually 2 jeeps with 2 guys in front and two girls in back sitting on a cooler holding onto the roll bar.

(Ahh youth . . .)

One day a friend of one of the guys joins us in a Subaru GL wagon. One of the cool ones with a low range and limited slip rear diff. He was very skilled and was able to go anywhere we could go.

Am I saying the Subar was as good as the jeeps. Of course not. With equally skilled drivers the Jeeps would dominate. But that's not typically the case. Similarly, a skilled person will know when to throw in the towel and turn around.

Ford is really focusing a lot of their marketing money on people with no off-road experience. I've been paying attention to the new Bronco's launch closely. (I have a reservation on one, delivery expected 3/2022 , ha. ). Their whole GOAT mode pitch is that it pulls in a combination of differential locks, high or low range, 2wd or 4wd as well as tweaks to throttle response and traction control based on the surface you select. Fortunately you can still adjust everything manually.

But I'm sure people can't help thinking the magic GOAT dial will save the day.

Kind of like jeep guys have been doing in the snow on regular AT tires for the last 40 years. ha.

The BS is a Broncaru. Ford's answer to a Renegade (like that needed an answer).

My son was so impressed with the Jeep line that when he got to drive the then newly redesigned Compass, he stopped looking at other vehicles entirely - and he's one to shop around and not stop until he's weighed all options and pros and cons of everything from Toyota to Hyundai to whatever... he drove the Jeep Compass and that was that. And usually he doesn't keep a vehicle too long - I was totally surprised when he called me the other day talking about his Jeep - really? You, Luke, STILL have that Jeep? The guy who said Jeeps were too expensive, not enough this or that?
But don't even talk to him about Renegade - he says Jeep really screwed themselves on that and says he can't see how they even put their badge on it. He had one as a rental and assumed - hey, it's a Jeep, it will get us through. Got stuck in what we consider a normal Iowa snow storm.

Anyway, thinking back to my son's comments on the Renegade, your comment on it made me laugh and think of his comments on how worthless it was on gravel roads and in snow.
He assumed it was to get the young minimalist generation into the Jeep brand - and that's about what I see driving them around here.

Batman drove one! :giggle:

It's only there for CAFE. And rental fleet share - not everyone wants to drive a Malibu.

Batman vs. Superman - and the Dawn of Justice version.
My son DEFINITELY didn't have THAT version.
I suspect my son had the basic rental version without 4 wheel drive.

CAFE for sure, and getting people introduced to the Jeep brand in a rental vehicle. I can see that.

The renegade is a barely reworked Fiat with car tires on it.

As you (but possibly some others don't) know, traction in difficult situations is all tire dependent. A decent FWD car with a good set of snow tires will outperform a Gladiator High altitude (with high performance low profile tires) in the snow and mud.

And like I'm fond of saying, all the ground clearance and lockers in the world don't help you stop and turn. Tires do.

Oh, yeah, we had a Stratus years ago for a short time - that car would go a lot of places, even in snow deeper than the front bumper. Tires tires tires.
I'll also never forget - I was working as a mechanic and worked on the first front wheel drive car I'd ever worked on and took it for a test drive after. It was mid-winter here, snow and ice all over. I was pulling away from a stop sign, watching others spin and slide and that thing took off with enough traction even in the snow it would have liked to take the steering wheel out of my hand.

It's one reason I bought the tires for my JT that I did. SNOW, ice and wet.
I found this truck wasn't all that great as equipped. I insisted on certain markings - for snow.

.... the sport should have been named the Pinto
It sure ain't a bronco. I suggest pony, colt, whatever, but it ain't no bronco - even though it might buck.

If Ford would just stick to the horse monikers...

Bronco Sport should have been named differently and released prior to the Bronco.

It should have been:

Bronc

Followed by:

Broncoooooooooooly s**t! 35s?! Removable roof?!

Shadowpapa,

In the blizzard of 78, my sister was stuck at a friends house. My dad had just purchased a Saab 99 from a friend who was the crew chief for Saab's factory rally team. Based out of Orange CT. It came with a set of tall, skinny Vredestein mud rally tires. We had never used them because the car was so good normally in the snow.

When the blizzard hit we put the Vredesteins on the Saab and went out. It was amazing. we were going past and around everything. it was just the plows and us. We picked up my sister without any drama and went home. Amazing stuff for the 70s.

One other thought on the whole Bronco vs Jeep thing.

Some people may live in an area where the Jeep dealer is great and the ford dealer crappy. Others may have their situation reversed.

I used to work at a local dealer that was the only dealer in town. We were a good dealer with honest sales practices and great service.

People wanted to buy from us to spend local. There are lots of towns where this is the case. In that case, if the dealer is a Jeep dealer, the jeep is a better choice. If the ford dealer is strong and honest, then the Bronco is a better choice.

I am on my first Jeep which I am liking. The Jeep platform has been out there for years and I like some of the old school traits like straight front axle and a few other things. I have had a lot of four wheel drive trucks and even a last generation Bronco, even had a IH Scout. I feel the Bronco has changed and is not what I would have expected. Time will tell and Fords have a lot of expensive repairs for stupid things. Their tail lights don’t hold up well and with no damage mine got water in it. Because I had the passing sensor it blew out all finds of other sensors including A/C, window, and others. It cost me $2000.00. Yes my A/C quit and windows did not work. This I found out is not uncommon. I think the Bronco is going to be a money pit.
