Looking for input please, if there are prior threads please by all means point me to them, I haven't found a search term that seems to zero in.

Historically, I never buy extended warranties. On just about anything. I've always looked at it that the manufacturer wouldn't be offering them unless they come out ahead, which means that they aren't a good value to the cusomer. And, specific to vehicles, I've either bought new vehicles that I don't expect to be keeping way, way past the factory warranty, or I've had vehicles that were old enough that any kind of warranty was in the laughably distant past.

My 2020 JT is my favorite vehicle, ever. I expect to be keeping it far longer than I have kept anything else with four wheels.

And I have become aware that especially if something goes wildly haywire with sensors and digital systems, it'll be way beyond my DIY abilities, even though I've got a lot of both mechanical and electrical/electronic DIY experience, especially because I need the truck up and running as my main daily driver. I've also become aware that these things can be out of the blue and expensive. My last vehicle, a 2015 Ram Ecodiesel, had a cracked bolt on an exhaust flange, for no particular reason (the truck never saw severe conditions), that only announced itself when the engine error light came on because the exhaust had shifted and wobbled around just enough (no audible difference in the exhaust) to wreck the wiring on the post-DPF $800 sensor ($800 part, $300 labor)... about three months after I'd passed the 3/36 warranty [and about 3 months before the whole "Ecodiesel settlement" thing offered the cash payout and the extended emission/drivetrain warranty].

After that, with the Ecodiesel, and even though I didn't buy an extended warranty at time of purchasing my JT, I am beginning to [maybe] see extended warranties as "insurance against surprise vacuum cleaner in wallet."

I'll be coming up on 3 years with my JT this coming August, I won't be anywhere near 36,000 miles by then.

Appreciate insights, experiences, etc., of whether I should really consider a Mopar Extended Warranty (or other?). And, if so, any "do's" "don'ts" etc., about what to get, where to get it, how to get it, is it an all at once expense or something you can pay over time, how much it really covers, etc., any types to steer clear of, etc., that a newb-to-extended-warranty person like me wouldn't know but would benefit from knowing.

Thanks in advance

First, be aware there are more extended warranties available than just the manufacturers.

Second, the price IS negotiable no matter what some dealerships try to say. Just like the sale of a vehicle, they profit off of the difference between actual cost and what they can get above.

Third, if you financed outside of Jeep, see if your lien holder offers an extended warranty. My CU does and it's much cheaper than Factory.

Finally, how long do you normally keep a vehicle? That is a BIG factor in deciding on extended warranty. Personally I have been trading in every 48-54 months. Don't know about with the JT, unless the right color comes out.

I, like you, abhor extended warranties.
But, when 1 year of ownership rolled around on the JT, and I had nearly 28k miles on it, I went and bought one.
I got 75k miles/5 years through the dealer in MI (IIRC) that is highly recommended here on the forums.
I figure one electronic system failure will pay for the warranty.

I used to skip extended warranties as most mechanical stuff I can fix, but with all the electrical crap in the new vehicles, I tend to get them now.

Tom was the cheapest I found by far. After a couple of emails back and forth and a 2 minute phone call to give him my credit card info, I was done. He immediately provided PDFs of the application, plan and coverage. And, then I received hard copies of everything in the mail. He quickly responded to my inquiries and was a pleasure to deal with. I'm on my second warranty with him.

What are the maintenance requirements for the extended warranties, just track my maintenance like the factory or do I have to do all service with my Jeep dealership? There were a few dealerships around that were offering lifetime on their Ford trucks, but all maintenance had to be done through them. When you realize you're paying 2-3x for a tire rotation, oil change, ect..... it made it was more expensive than it should have been.

Also, do these follow the same rules as factory around aftermarket mods? Can a dealership "suspend" my warranty at any time based on mods?

For a factory warranty, you can do your own maintenance, or use a private garage, as long as you keep all the receipts and document that you followed the manufacturers maintenance requirements. You do not have to use a dealer to maintain your warranty. My GUESS is that a dealership warranty may not allow that. After all, they offer the lifetime warranty so you are tied to them forever.

As far as dealership warranties go, they are usually more expensive and cover less. So, its important to read the fine print. Also, what happens to your dealer warranty if they fold, no longer carry the brand or sell the dealership?

Tom quoted me quite an aggressive price, great guy to work with. I ended up with 8-yr/100k with a $200 deductible miles for around $1,500. Max Care is nationwide, I purchased my truck out of state. Over the decades I’ve never once leveraged an extended warranty for their intended purpose. Historically I just don’t seem to keep cars that long.

If priced right, I get them because they pull a premium come resale time. People will travel far and wide for a car with extended coverage vs gamble on something local which has fallen out of the factory warranty period. I’ll make money on the cost of the warranty and hey, if it happens to protect me during my ownership great, but that’s not the primary reason I go extended.

That sounds like a great price! I just got off the phone with Chrysler—they quoted me a 5 yr for $2600.

I too NEVER buy an extended warranty on anything, appliances, cars, TV, etc. None.
I'm 52 years old now and have not had any of those items break in a time or way that an extended warranty would have been helpful. Thus, even if I get screwed by a "break" that an extended warranty would cover, over my lifetime the money I saved by not buying them will be less than the cost of the repair.

In the long run I win.

This is the first vehicle Ive ever gotten the extended warranty on. I trust my dealer ( I know...rare...but they are and have always been great with me) and they recommended the extended warranty. The dealer actually said to go with a third party warranty as apposed to the mopar one, and made the case that I drive a LOT. Ive had my JT for two years(ish) now and have nearly 60k miles on it. I ended up getting 100,000 mile / 5 year warranty and im glad I did!

Shortly after the OEM warranty ended I had an issue with my brakes that the shop had fixed under the extended warranty. The cost of the repairs would have been close to the cost of the total warranty cost. So im glad I got it.

I may regret it—but I’m leaning toward no extended warranty. I have never bought—or needed one—before and all of the financial gurus out there say it is a mistake. It’s kinda like Vegas—it’s designed for you to lose and them to win. There will be occasional winners—but the odds are against you.

I’m extremely happy I bought it. These trucks seem plagued with issues. I had an engine replaced at 500 miles. Currently my truck has been in the shop for 3 weeks now for another engine/harness issue. I’m still under the factory warranty but if this is how it’s going in the beginning I can’t imagine after the original warranty goes all the issues that might come up.
Here’s what I have had so far…this is all before 10k miles…
Engine knock = engine replacement
P0300 = camshaft replacement
Engine misfire = new wiring harness
Freedom panel creek = TSB
Leaking axle = quoted me 6 months so I just replaced it myself
Parking brake failure = blaming the extra weight which I call bs as my JKU was much heavier w bigger tires and steel everywhere and it worked fine.
ESS never works = dealer hopes new harness will fix it
Steering box = TSB
Coolant leak=Fitting leak
Cam Sensor oil leak = replaced both
Rear camera blurry = replacement

I’ve had the truck 12 months…for 8 weeks and counting it has been in the shop.

I have never purchased a warranty before but for the love of god do it with this vehicle!
