I found the qty online, that being said, i have always just added oil to a diff on level ground until it started to dribble out of the fill plug. Buying 2 qts per axle should get you to the point of dribble with a little left over.

If you add too much oil it could aerate and start foaming everywhere... But I guess it also depends where your fill hole is. On my d60s its 80% up from the top so I do the dribble out thing as well.

Odd can't find in the version I have - still digging. I posted the capacities in another thread about the axle leaks how much these held and was sure it was in there but then I've updated my PDF version a couple of times. So it was either in my original version or apparently another document.Can you tell on what page? I have read the manual and this is all I can find o page 369.
Page 509 of this is only showing the fluid spec. Odd.

Thanks for posting about changing the diff oil early. I drained and refilled both axles on my Rubicon today at 4K miles. Rear was black with goo on drain plug magnet. Took 49 oz. to refill. Front was a little dark at start of drain, turned to a honey color, also had goo on magnet. Took 37 oz. to refill. Used Valvoline synthetic 75W-90. I'll do a drain and refill on the rear in another 4K miles or so.

Replaced my differential oil today with 2750 miles. The rear was gross pitch black and very nasty. The front was a clear amber.

Just ran across this thread. Is this “gross oil” considered normal or is this a problem? I’m betting most Jeep owners are not checking this until the maintenance schedule says to check/service it. I’ve got a 2021 Mojave with 3300 miles and now I’m a bit paranoid. I want to take the best care of my truck. Can any others smart on this stuff chime in about it?

Changed mine at 21k it was a little dark but not bad at all, I have Trac Lok, curious if the open diff or Rubicon and Mojave’s with the locker get darker sooner.

Just did a diff fluid change at 18,000 on Max Tow. Coloring wasn’t too bad. Rear obviously was darker than front.

Well, erring on the side of caution, I changed the rear diff oil on my 2021 Mojave at 4000 miles. It appeared cloudy with a dark grey color but was not “gross” in my opinion. Replaced it with Amsoil Severe Gear 75W-90. Will change the front diff and transfer case fluids next with Amsoil and let that ride to the first scheduled maintenance of those items.

I agree 100% with doing early differential oil changes just to get rid of any contaminants. I did both of mine at around 2500 miles.
People are often concerned about the dark appearance and 'unique' smell of used EP type gear oil. Dark, stinky gear oil is typical and, just like with engine oil, the dark appearance is not necessarily an indication of oil condition. The EP additives are typically what causes the oil to become dark with use, and the more heavily loaded the axle, the quicker the oil will become dark. This is why the rear axle fluid is typically darker when you go to change both front & rear diff oil.
