From my experience in the industry, right at the turn of the big change, engine covers started being design when electronics came into the picture. Early injectors, purge valves and electric EGR valves where noisy and unsightful. The engine cover help to kill the noise and the look. The pentastar has been a notoriously noisy engine. VVT, injectors, fuel venting valve, intake honk, it has a symphony of things going on. Now what I have noticed is as you calibrate the VVT, the timing, and the airflow, you can quite this engine down substantially. If you have a supercharged jeep, drive my EVO 31 tune vs my EVO NP 2 tune. The amount of mechanical racket is way reduced. My guess is Jeep is figuring this out also, and why not ditch the cover I bet it is a huge cost savings. I was personally very happy to ditch the engine cover, it made my engine look killer

The dealership stated that some models did not come with one.
I really get a kick out of the bullshit lies dealership personnel make up on the fly for stuff they do not know or do not want to deal with to resolve. This is one of those instances.

If Jeep actually de-contented the engine cover, then the rear mount bracket across the intake manifold should also be missing. Otherwise, I would be making them show me where you got the cost credit and/or making them get you one. For that matter, tell them to take one off the lot of another vehicle and have them sell that bullshit story to the next customer.

Cannot comment on the Gladiator here.. but on many vehicles in the past the engine cover was to hide the ugly engine with wire harnesses all over the place. No other purpose. Look at Ford's crown jewels - the Cobras... and GT500s too which were also Cobras....no engine cover in sight, even pre Terminator era ( no blower ). It was just a well designed aesthetic engine compartment.

Point stands - engine covers are for ugly engines.
Yep. Modern motors mostly look like crap. I miss those motors with the polished valve covers, stainless steel lines, etc. etc. Even superchargers, turbos are usually hidden. Modern manufacturers just have no pride in showing a mechanical masterpiece. Probaby comes down to money. Always does.

The Dodge Hemi police cars don't use engine covers, haven't since they were introduced in 2006 or so
Probably because they spend so much time in the shop.

I find it interesting, but should know better by now, that it doesn't matter if you show supporting evidence, science, demonstrations or engineering materials, it still comes down to "I think it's for xxxx". LOL
Think about it - would a cop car be concerned about that last dB of sound? Or MPG?
Out there are wind tunnel demos showing how they want the air that goes through the radiator and fan to be directed - for component cooling and to force it back and down a certain way to join the stream below the vehicle.
Of course like Dave said - if you take the sound or noise part of it away by making OTHER changes, or the market you are selling to doesn't care if it wakes up baby or some sound annoys a 20 year old girl who is primary driver, then you won't see it (police and patrol cars, for example, or performance trucks and cars)
Who knows the reason for sure - it's all speculation for the most part - even if your mechanic or sales person claims to know.
It is a given that it's for sound and air flow in many cases because you can easily find the supporting information - rather than "I think" or guessing. The latter is obviously more fun than real research, though.

The bracket holds a vent tube as well. That's why it's still there.

I read that the covers have been deleted and that some may come with engine cover brackets still in place. Dealers were also told not to put covers on as they were not to be re-imbursed.
Just on the Willy or all models ?

Do the Willys edition Gladiators come with the engine cover? My Willys Gladiator did not have a cover on the engine. It was not there when it was offloaded from the truck, nore was it inside the vehicle. The dealership stated that some models did not come with one. Is there anyone else here, whose JT did not come with the engine cover?
Several of the 3.6 motors on Stellantis different vehicles are not coming with the cover. I know for example on the GCL there are certain trims that didn’t have it but most now do not. No idea what shortage caused this one but it’s just another example of how crazy this stuff can get.
