From my experience in the industry, right at the turn of the big change, engine covers started being design when electronics came into the picture. Early injectors, purge valves and electric EGR valves where noisy and unsightful. The engine cover help to kill the noise and the look. The pentastar has been a notoriously noisy engine. VVT, injectors, fuel venting valve, intake honk, it has a symphony of things going on. Now what I have noticed is as you calibrate the VVT, the timing, and the airflow, you can quite this engine down substantially. If you have a supercharged jeep, drive my EVO 31 tune vs my EVO NP 2 tune. The amount of mechanical racket is way reduced. My guess is Jeep is figuring this out also, and why not ditch the cover I bet it is a huge cost savings. I was personally very happy to ditch the engine cover, it made my engine look killer
