Would you buy the diesel if no local dealers were familiar with them?

Do they even sell Ram 1500, 2500, 3500 diesels?

if so, I’d have no issues. Parts and design can/are different from one diesel to the next, but fundamentals are all the same.

How local is your local dealer? Maybe a bit further could find you a better service department. That's the route I've had to take. Dealership I purchased from is only 20 minutes away but past experience along with the appearance of their service department prevents me from going back, gas or diesel. I drive over an hour for a cleaner, better organized service department with hopefully better trained technicians.

Oh yeah, I have a diesel and issues with about 11 months and 15k miles of ownership. 1 - "service Def, see dealership" @ about 1500 miles. Error code cleared, no apparent issues, an least reported to me or detailed on file, though they kept it for a week. 2 - A/C went out about two weeks ago, no refrigerant. System was recharged but no tell-tell signs of a leak, sure I'll be bake with this issue. 3 - ERG valve issue from earlier in November, part got here last week. In shop last Friday, hope to get back Monday or Tuesday. Also addressing the start/stop not working at this time.

Been lucky enough that at least a loaner vehicle has been available during my truck's extended stays. I like my little truck but what few vehicles I've owned in my lifetime, this one has given me the most trouble. Hopefully the things don't persist that would have me change my mind.

Good luck with your decision.

My question is, if your local dealerships had experience with only one diesel order since introduction, nothing to test drive, unfamiliar on fixing them... Would you order?

Both of my local options to buy, and more importantly service, don't typically order diesels. I worry potential repairs will be a nightmare. I can order from them, but test driving isn't an option.

Little context, I've had a diesel VW and it was perfect as a commuter. We have a boat I tow around town a few times a year and 1.5 hours each way maybe once a year. A lot of around town trips and no current daily commute. Probably not ideal for the diesel.

I say I want to keep the Jeep a while post warranty as a 3rd vehicle, but don't have a great track record on longer term ownership. Will not go over 35s and Mojave, or minimal spacer lift on other model to clear 35s as needed.
I wouldn't buy anything with Tier IV Emissions on it whether the dealer knew how to fix it or not.

I said that from the beginning and was shouted down by the "muh torque" crowd.

Now that they have been out for a while there is page after page of after treatment failures.

So, no.

Thanks, this is making me decision to go Mojave easier. Friend is a sales manager at dealer an hour away, and he is upfront about them getting no diesels. Local dealership is full of scum bags that lied over work on wife's Grand Cherokee. I only go there to test drive and waste their time.

Where in MA are you? I am about 15 miles north of Boston, Kelly on RT1 in Lynnfield has a pretty good inventory usually but they don't discount much, also read somewhere they are now the largest Jeep dealer in the US, not sure what they are measuring to determine that.

I'm 15 miles South of Boston. Quirk is the local, terrible place.

Hard to get away from the emissions, things are tight on all diesel forms, truck, tractor, construction equipment, etc. It's all a political gimmick.

Yup that watered down Urea has fouled many a diesel.
When it first came out in our fleet we had nothing but troubles in the winter.
Better today, but still an issue in extreme cold.

I worked with FCA for years and its funny, I keep up with most new models and features so I usually do my homework beforehand. Case in point when I picked up my 21’ gladiator, i knew my sport had two piece fenders and the sales team had no idea. Just do your homework and know what you want and need. Sometimes salesman for car guys like us are just admin at that point. I like it that way tbh.

I did. But I also have a choice of three Jeep dealer's within 45 minutes. I'm sure they worked on the Ecodiesel before. I do know it wasn't a Gladiator. Mine was the first diesel. They have a dedicated diesel tech which is nice. My fuel pump went out. They replaced the entire fuel system. No issues so far. I'm happy with their work.
