Nothing wrong with a relay, but if you’re hooking up something using less than 40 amps and you have a switch to spare, there is already a relay and fuse wired into that circuit.
True, but if someone plugs something else into that Anderson connector and doesn't know it was only wired for 40A, they could melt the AUX wiring... no fun.

It’s fused. The fuse would blow. What Anderson connector? The aux positive leads are bare wire closed with shrink tubing.

You are right, then I guess he's covered. that horse is dead...

The OP said he was running the wires to an Anderson connector in the bed in the first post. Yes the leads in the JT are bare

Good call. Missed that. Of course, one should know what’s on the other end of any connector that’s added. If it’s for future use, just label it 40amp max, aux 1, or similar.

I am going to run a length of 10 gauge positive and negative wire from the battery to the bed terminating in an Anderson connector for my portable ARB air compressor.

I would like to tie it into Aux switch 1 or 2 (40 amp switches) so I can control when it is hot.
I am having a hard time wrapping my head around how I’m going to do that. I don’t think I can run the negative straight to the battery and the positive to the switch 1 wiring in the engine bay can I?

EDIT No way. At quick glance the ends look like 18 or 20ga wire

I did buy a 40 amp circuit breaker to use just in case I do go straight to the battery.

Thanks.
I did this with my warn winch, using the warn switch solenoid kit. I use the aux switch to route power when I need the winch, thus, avoiding all that power running down those huge cables all the time, ie. in case of an accident.... I only had to make my own bracket. Here are some pics:
