Leaking axle seal?

Just received an update on my gladiator right rear axle oil leak. So somehow, there is metal in the rear axle.... I'm now getting a brand new rear axle with approx 3,000 miles on my truck. Hopefully the new rear axle doesn't leak.

That makes me wonder what made them check for metal or was it obvious? I am going on my second week now of the replacement and so far, so good. Only about 250 miles on the new axle. Was the initial replacement axle part number you had the same as the one I just had put in mine (68471168AA SHAFT-AXLE REAR)?

I believe mine has failed again(shaft assembly replaced so far). Just put on 35 inch yokos and hoping they don't go there as it seems some other members experienced.

I wonder if I could get a rubicon housing under warranty instead?

there were a few people earlier in this thread that I believe claimed there was some resistance from the dealer due to larrger tires (but that the repair was ultimately done). I feel like I remember maybe one person stating their warranty claim was denied. Not sure if they tried a different delaer or if I am just remembering that wrong.....it's a long thread lol

Some shops are balking due to tire size - but they can't technically or legally do that.

And no - warranty is like for like only, nothing more. Why would you want a Rubicon axle setup? Width? Locker? Other than lockers or width, it's the same thing as other levels.

I think the rubicon has thicker axle walls too but not sure but yes width and the locker. If i could get that I would order the Currie HP 60 front axle that matches the rubicon width. That’s plenty strong for 40s and keeps the same bolt pattern

There has been dealers claiming that's whats causing the leak. Don't know that anyone has been hard denied, but I don't want to deal with that because we know it isn't the issue.

The thicker axle tube walls has pretty much been dismissed. It was based on early reports and blogs and speculation because of how 1 or 2 articles were worded.
All Gladiator axle tube walls are thicker - Wrangler was 7mm, Gladiator is 10mm
After the dust of confusion settled, even Jeep press releases and articles said "Gladiators get......" not "Rubicon gets" and there were direct comparison to Wranglers at 7mm.

68471168AA was what I also got replaced 500 miles ago.
I'm getting a new complete rear axle assembly.

Service advisor said that it was likely due to the oil loss from the leak. I don't buy that honestly. The amount of oil leaking could not have led to metal in the axle. Mine was leaking maybe 1 or 2 drops a day not even enough to sling onto the tire.

I'm curious to see if any signs of over heating bearings and what not but I don't think they will tear the axle apart so I can see ahahahah.

The ring gear slings oil around inside a differential - tossing it all over. It would have to be down more than a few drops to drop the level very far.

Agreed. Something is fishy and I can't help but suspect that the right axle shaft may have not been installed correctly when I took it in the first time. I didn't hear any unusual noises / grinding from the rear axle prior to dropping off.

Service advisor was unclear when i asked how much metal was found lol. He said that the tech reported metal in the axle and thats all he knew. My question is how much. The service advisor and I were not on the same page to have an in depth discussion of the failure so I ended the call soon after.

I'd like to have a conversation with the tech that is performing the work / found the metal in the axle however, has anyone ever gone that far at a dealer service department? Not sure if is that even an option in the automotive industry honestly.

When I was wrenching on construction equipment, it was common to have conversations with our customers in regard to the repairs/diagnostics performed on their equipment. I do realize however, that the auto and construction equipment industries differ significantly.

Mine is leaking. Build date 9-21. 4000 miles. Can't call jeep until tomorrow as they are closed Sundays.

This thread makes me so happy that I have an early 2020 build. I had Yukon 5.13 gears installed last fall with Lucas HD gear oil. I could just imagine the problems I would of got myself into.

I hope you don't have warranty issues with that because the way Jeep has been working on some things, they might just fight you having used Lucas when they don't say "or equivalent" in their charts.
For engine oil, they seem to be fine with anything that matches their specs.

My build date has a rattle from the engine at 3k rpm seldomly with the 6spd manual. I've been waiting patiently for a fix as other members have been taking it to the dealer. Hopefully they don't give me any problems since I'm not having issues with anything else. I also have Yukon differential covers.
