M/TS suck in the sand but it's interesting that people told you BFG KO2S do bad in the sand. Not my experience at all, they have always did great in the sand for me, on the JKU I had they were awesome. My last 3 sets of tires on it were KO2s in 35's and we took it on the beach probably well over 20 times and never had issue. Even in the sand dunes in the outer banks they did great. Just air down and have at it.

Thank you all for the replies. Granted, I was using this as excuse to get more aggressive looking tires, but, if I can save the money for a bit, then that’s what I’ll do.

I plan on hitting the beaches next weekend and will air down and see how they do.

The locale is fort fisher, NC which, I’m sure some of you have seen. Getting from the parking lot to the beach itself is some pretty thick, soft sand - but a little firmer up on the beach itself (depending where one drives).

I’ve been in a hurry and not aired before. It’s a noticeable difference. I was there on a busy day and some dipshit in front of me was in a compass and struggling. He was going too slow and I finally had to pass him because I needed more speed without my tires aired down.

Glad I don’t drive a Compass! I usually feel like my Mojave is struggling when I do not air down, but I have never felt like I was going to get stuck.

Never felt like I was going to get stuck but I felt it bogging down or digging a few times. That was early last summer and the rangers did tell me that the sand was especially soft last year and some stupid number of tows they did, which was a record to that point.

Definitely adequate in the sand. Not quite as good as an a/t but they get the job done and ill take the trade off for their performance on the rocks.

The only sand driving I’ve done was in my old truck on Nokian Rotviian AT aired down, which did great.
I would imagine most any all terrain would do well if you air down.

Micky Thompson has a Baja tire which sure sounds the part.

The Falken Wildpeaks are highly rated in sand, so I bet you could score some take offs from a Mojave or Rubicon. Same with the BFG AT; you could no doubt get some Wrangler Rubicon take offs

Turns out Motortrend found that IF you air down, a Mud Terrain does just as well as an All Terrain. So seems like the most important thing is to air down!

Yeah my wife usually does not air down in her JK. Even though I keep telling her to. I will take mine out to fort fisher soon, just have not had time.

The faster you go in sand the more you float. Generally speaking driving angry in the sand is better then driving conservative, especially in the sugar sands.

Drove Ft. Fisher last August on Falken MT take offs. Aired down and had no issues on these. Got me there and back several times.

so I found some Mojave takeoffs locally for 800 bucks with 1500 miles (minus tpms). Yay Facebook marketplace.

would the size difference be detrimental to my vehicle? Current tires are 255/70r18 and these are 285/70r17.

They wont be detrimental at all. You will likely loose some MPG though.
