I have some questions about your upside-down rack. Aside from a lower profile, was there anything that prevents it from functioning?
Not really. It is a basket type design, so upside down anything placed on it would need a tie down to keep it from moving past the edges. There is a nut slot all the way around in the top of the outer edge for attaching accessories, so not much use when upside down. I bought some brackets from Front Runner to attach a light bar to the front of the rack. They attach to the outer slot, so I'll have to turn it over to mount the lights.

That’s interesting. I don’t really use the rack like a basket. I have FR quick connects for a tent and then like you I’ve mounted some FR brackets but for an awning (RSI is a little too wide for them) my biggest issue is that it isn’t low profile. I might flip mine and see how it fits in the garage. Thanks!

Bill, would you please share some pictures of your upside down RSI Roof Rack? Maybe some edges or corners. I'd like to put a RTT and some scene lights on the RSI SmartCap, and the upside down roof rack sounds like a perfect solution for me.

I'll take some this afternoon and put them up.

It was totally by accident, partly from doing it at night in low light. It took we a while to realize it was upside down. I bought a 40" light bar to mount on the front edge of it, and some mounts from Front Runner. Now I'm debating whether to mount it since I need to turn it over so the light would be high enough.

@Mr._Bill

Did you ever flip your rack or add the 40” bar?

I have not got it flipped over, yet. Since I have other lights facing forward, I am now thinking about mounting the light bar on the back of the rack facing to the rear.

I purchased the flat platform rack by RSI which looks great, however they don't really supply any of the mounting accessories for it. I'm finding out that it takes an M8 square nut which isn't really advertised anywhere I found that on the RSI forum maybe rhino rack & others may work but right now it's a guessing game. I want to mount my tire on it and maybe my MaxTrax Recovery boards. RSI couldn't tell me if the tire mount would work or not. I really want to mount the Warrior 809 roof rack tire mount vs the strap down models. I recommend the Rack since it's made for the smartcap but be aware mounting hardware and accessories for it may be a bit of a hassle.

The square nuts are avalible on amazon, I bought a bunch and actually helped a couple guys out. I don't have any spares, but in the original RSI thread where we all bought them knowing like six month wait, there are links to the nuts in there. They are the way to go stronger then tee bolts I think. Big heavy tire on tire mount, on top of rack on top of RSI Cap will raise your center of gravity a bit. Your Jeep looks great by the way!.....Jack

I did end up ordering the Warrior 839 spare tire mount for the roof rack. It's 8" on center like the RSI model, it's designed for Safari roof racks so hopefully it will work.

Nice rig and nice work with that rack over your RSI! Did you finally mount the light bar on the back of the rack?

Not yet. I put everything on hold while I looked at trying to buy a new Overland. I eventually gave up and did an upgrade on the Extended Warranty. The Credit Union made a good offer, so I refinanced at a lower rate with a three month payment holiday. Now, I'm finally ready to start on it again.
