Guys...I just had a breakthrough idea on diesel oil temps. The factory heat exchanger uses coolant from the radiator to cool the oil through a small heat exchanger. This works fine but the issue is coolant temps can hit 220-240. So not much cooling going on.

It would be pretty simple to toss two coolant lines, a pump and throw a small radiator somewhere with a fan. This would cool the oil much easier and to a greater degree not limited by the coolant temperature and thermal regulation of that.

It would be safer too as a failure of a line is for the oil cooler and you keep oil pressure.

thoughts?

It will probably not work. The tier 4 engage designed to run hot. That is why they have a different oil standard. Your thermostat also opens at closes at a higher temp then a non‐tiered engine. My advice would be to not worry about it, it is simply running how it was designed to run.

There's already a big radiator on the front of the vehicle to do this. Where would you put this additional one? There don't appear to be any options that would be more efficient than the stock setup.

You were heavily involved in the discussion that @eeTwidget linked. The space issue was described quite well in there.

It sounds absurd, but years (decades?) ago I saw trophy trucks with heat exchangers in the bed.

Instead of replacing the main radiator entirely, what if the smaller, fan assisted cooler was put in line with the output from the main radiator, before the water/oil heat exchanger. That would eliminate the need for a water pump. The small cooler may fit under the drivers feet. There is a space a couple feet long next to the frame.

That plate is for the last generation engine. Is the oil cooler the same on the current design? I asked a vendor in St George, he said it would not work on ours. It would be nice if it did.

That's the question that I need answered. From looking on-line at pictures of the 2gen and 3 gen oil filter housings. They look to be the same. I'm half temped to buy a 3gen oil filter housing to see. And maybe get a machine shop to make a plate. I can't do anything until after the 4th of July when I'm back home. Going to be on the run starting on the 4th of next month.

Anyone know the flow rate through the factory heat exchanger? I think the adapter from insane diesel only flows about 3gpm. If we tapped in pre or post of the factory heat exchanger and used a remote mounted cooler with a fan and an inline thermostat to turn on the fan, we may have enough flow reduce temps when high. Maybe set the fan thermostat to 200*? My oil temp in current ambient (75*F) is usually around 220, my coolant is usually around 214. Freeway driving 80ish I usually get into the 230*F range without pushing it or towing.

From what I found out. The oil goes from the oil pump, to the heat exchanger. Oil enters in the bottom of it and exits at the top into the filter. It gets full oil flow and pressure.

The factory radiator doing the cooling for the heat exchanger has a 3.0l diesel and egr heating it up. A separate system would have air ambient cooling it.

Possibly some good news - response from Baxter

"We are developing a remote adapter for the 3.0 Ecodiesel, please sign up for our newsletter from our homepage to stay informed about new and current product offerings."

If they put out an adapter we only have the challenge of where to put the cooler and remote filter. There is room down below to mount a small cooler with fans and a remote filter. Would have to create skid plate to protect it all, but it could work.
