3.6 is a slug. Love my Ecodiesel!
I'm a diesel guy. I have a Ram 3500 with the venerable Cummins turbo diesel engine, my 4th. I have a John Deere diesel tractor (Yanmar). I have the 3.6 Pentastar and I LOVE it. Slug? No. She rips with the 8 speed tranny.

I miss my Cummins. I downsized to the Gladiator when I retired. I'm living in a metro area now. No land to maintain, no tractors or heavy equipment to haul. The only thing I might tow is one of the motorcycles. Just didn't need a one-ton anymore.

I've spent plenty of time behind the wheel of Pentastar and Ecodiesel versions of the Gladiator and the Ram. I agree that that the Pentastar isn't a slug, but to me it is a boring engine for a truck or off-road vehicle. The torque is way up on the the rev scale, you really have to squeeze it out of that engine. That makes it fun for a car, or even a Gladiator doing street duty only. But I want the grunt down low on a truck. That's where the diesel shines.

Both of them are going to get to 60mph in about 7.3 seconds. So when we're talking speed, they're about the same. But how they deliver their power is completely different. I'd choose the Pentastar over the Ecodiesel in a grocery-getter 100% or the time. But in a truck....give me diesel.

Well, that's what my Gladiator is - a grocery getter/toy. When I need a truck, I get in my 1 ton diesel.

My opinion on all the new diesels laden with the excessive emissions equipment (DPF/SCR) is that they are terrible for urban environments, stop and go, and just running around. They load up with soot, get stuck in an almost perpetual state of regen, and suffer. They shine out on the open roads, highways, and towing.

If I wanted to tow loads with my Gladiator, I'd have opted for the diesel. However, I have a diesel truck for that. Further, I am enjoying having the flexibility of a gas engine and the associated savings in fuel costs per gallon. Diesel is running 70 cents per gallon more around here, currently.

These threads are beyond pointless. Fortunately they don’t sell the diesel as an option anymore, fill in whatever reason suits your narrative, and this shit will hopefully fade out over time. Possibly interested in the diesel? Go drive both, weigh out the pros and cons on your specific use case, be honest with yourself, and make decision. It is that simple, there is no sure thing either way.

I burn heating oil and have no emissions test to deal with. You are paying more with the 3.6 gas - than I with the 3.0 diesel… I have 400+lbs of torque, you might make 260 with the RPMs screaming…pretty easy decision really…

Now is the last chance to gets the 3.0 as new and for a good deal. One would have to looks in the used market later this year. And dealers might not giving out heavy discount when there's only few left.

I have a perspective that I don't think I have ever seen posted in any of the hundreds of diesel jeep threads I have read over the 15 years of waiting and 2 years of owning. It all starts with Crude.
Crude Oil is the raw material which gets pumped out of the ground, shipped around the world, and through a process known as "refining" becomes either gasoline or diesel fuel.
Sure everybody knows that much.
Ah, but did you know it takes 20% more Crude oil to produce 1 gallon of gasoline?

Diesel by its nature is less refined, and therefore you 20% more fuel overall out of 1 barrel of crude oil.
To put it another way; If you have 2 barrels of crude getting refined one each into Gasoline and Diesel:
You will get 4 gallons of Gas.
You will get 5 gallons of Diesel.

Add to that 20% the inherent 33% increased efficiency of diesel to move heavy objects, and now you are starting to see what I realized in 1993 when a buddy of mine being shipped out to Kuwait explained he was being sent to guard our Crude interests.
I never want to see another service member die in the line of duty to protect my gas-hog vehicles.
Yes I might need a truck to support my livelihood, homesteads, and occasionally a vacation back into the beautiful natural parks and beaches.
But I can CHOOSE to make the most responsible, durable, and fun decision possible.

Minimum 53% less Crude Oil consumed with Diesel vs. Gasoline.

I know that might be a tough pill for some to acknowledge as true.
So enjoy the fuel logs for 36,000 miles over 2 years, and just like Jimmy Neutron & Sheen said:
"Never Argue With The Data."

This opinion may change over time but I have performed the math. It is pretty complicated so please try to keep up. After owning my new Mojave for a week, I have a unique perspective of being qualified to compared It to my diesel. The Mojave equals fun. The diesel Rubicon equals fun squared! There is really no wrong answer as even the wrong answer is fun! Just buy one, drive it, and enjoy it because everyone has an opinion and the only one that matters is your own!
