In an ideal world - larger bits get washed down to the sump by the oil returning to the sump and are caught in the oil pump pickup screen, everything else at the oil filter so there's nothing circulating around in the engine.
My thing is the stuff that gets through the screen to eat at the oil pump.
From your thoughts I'm thinking at minimum a pickup screen cleaning and pan cleaning would be ideal case scenario.

Yes and as easy as it is to access those bits (unlike a 1980s Pontiac that required pulling the engine or half of the front of the car apart), that's what I'd hope would happen.

Yes a good clean and flush should do it. Long enough to get it traded in.

Back in the day, a cam failure was pretty much going to lead to an engine rebuild. I have seen cam and lifter failure on Hemi engines where metal got as far as the oil control valve (controls phaser operation), these engines are recommended for replacement since they would require full disassembly for proper cleaning. There is no corresponding guidance for the Pentastar Upgrade engines, or any 3.6. I do an oil change, after replacing a cam and rockers. I have pulled the pan on an engine that had cam failure, there were no pieces of metal big enough to be caught by the oil pickup screen.

These vane type pumps, the more I think on it, are much less likely to be damaged than a typical gear type oil pump which are, well gears, not paddles pushing the oil.

Regarding these back orders. Does anyone know/think it would be worthwhile seeking out the largest dealership in the state. Maybe they would be a priority for getting the camshaft kits in stock. For instance my main hobby is bow hunting and I know that Mathew’s tends to send bows and parts faster to their top dealers. Thinking maybe I could speed up getting my Gladiator back on the road if I went that route, but if they don’t seem to give preference to orders then maybe a smaller dealership that has less volume of vehicles in need of service could get the job done in the same timeframe.

If the Diesel fuel pump recall was any indication of high demand and low supply, they do not do first come, first serve at a national level but spread out available supply that comes on line and allocate across the different parts distribution regions somewhat evenly. Will depend how each parts distribution region allocates what they are given to dealerships within their coverage area.

Basically, it may or may not pan out going to a larger dealership and getting on "their" waiting list.

Look to places that part out engines on line and junkyards.

He would then have to install it himself.
I ordered a used transmission and my local is installing it for me. They will install at their normal hourly rate.

Guess that would work if out of warranty. In warranty, not so much.
