Are service departments
taking reservations
are do they hold the vehicle
for the months it takes
to get parts or a new engine?
In other words can you get
on a waiting list
and continue to use the truck
in the meantime?

I was joking about pushing it, but yeah I signed off on the diagnostic. It is what it is. My FIL is retired from GM and he’s getting a lot of great employee incentives, so once the cam is replaced, I may be bailing.
Don't bail , you have to believe brother .
After you get it back take it out in some dirt for a spiritual refreshing 😂

Honestly, the tech didn’t specify today. He said something along the lines of calling me when the recall work is completed. But I told him when I dropped it off that it wasn’t necessary to do the recalls until they were also handling the camshaft under warranty. If they say drive it home, then they better be willing to replace the whole motor under warranty. That’s why I am going to ask to trade it in. I only had the CEL after WOT that never went over 5K rpms, so the damage might be light enough to baby it for a little while but I don’t want to void what little warranty I still have.

Unless they extend the warranty, no way I am keeping it. They can either take it as a trade-in on a new one or a Ram 1500, otherwise I will take it to a GM dealer and get the family discount.

The dealer it is with for service knows the current engine issues is not going to give you full trade in value. Same with any other dealer unless you pass it off as a pig in a poke undisclosed.

Not a good position to be in.

It may be a revelation to some folks, but there are absolutely no car or truck companies that have ZERO defects. Every dealership has a service department, no matter how much they try to keep it a secret. So, if another company looks better, check it out carefully. I worked in a Toyota dealership about 17 years ago, and I had the experience of seeing a completely full service department. I also noted several vehicles with engines either out or in an advanced state of disassembly for repair. If Toyota, which had the best reputation for reliability, had that much going on, think about how good other brands are going to be. Ultimately, the measure of a vehicle company isn't zero defects, which none of them can achieve even though they all should aim for that. It is how they address the inevitable issues that arise.

GM puts sawdust ......I mean gear lube .......ok, 40 weight oil in to mask the problem. Toyota years ago said there's no throttle problem, the list goes on, to include 1 million Mercedes with sunroofs that flew off on the highway.

So we are comparing a 1918 cam in block, push rod system V8 design to a dual OHC V6 ?
Aaaaah. Those were the days.
Feeler gauges.

When a 1960 owner manual talked of retorquing the head bolts and setting valve lash, and points and so on - and explained how to do it all right in a book in your glovebox.

Good luck with that, let me know how it works out for you.
