Im looking into getting some new tires and I like the idea of a skinnier tire since I dont go true offroading all that often; mainly just dirt trails. I unfortunately have the 3.73 axles and would like to avoid regearing. These are the tire sizes I have been looking into:

285/75 R17

34X10.5 R17

35X11.5 R17

Happy to hear any thoughts/opinions!

315/70R17 on a previous Gladiator that I had were 34.4". I had 1.5 level on front. Worked well for me. I did have 4.10 gears though.

As someone who contemplated this - just go with 35s.

I have 35x12.5x17s which weight about 59#(Toyos) and 3.73 and have zero issues with shifting or power compared to my heavier falken 33s.

Have you looked at the available tires in those sizes?

I might forgo certain sizes if other sizes offer the more desirable tread I want.
I have. Each size offers an A/T with solid reviews and are relatively equal in price.

I love my 285/75/17 BFGs. I don’t think you can wrong. My lift is in my signature. I cruise all day long in 8th and still get 16-17 mpg. I do see 7th a bit quicker in hills.

Be sure to take into account load rating and weight.

Some skinny / tall tires are only Load Range E and will ride a little rougher since they are meant for 3/4 ton trucks. Some tires, like the Falken AT3/W in 35x11.5 are actually heavier than a BFG KO3 in a more common and wider tire size such as 315/70R17.

I've been stressing about tires for my truck lately so I've been looking at numbers way, way too much 😆 I like the idea of running a skinny but have not found one that I personally want.

The sensible side of me says if you aren't wheeling just stay at 285/70 (stock Rubicon size), but I get that lifted trucks and bigger tires ARE cool lol. I have 285/70 on mine and am still strongly considering staying at that even though I am planning a trip to Moab next year.

Agree on tire weight!!! I switched from Goodyear Territory MT's to Milestar Patagoina MT's in the same size 315/70/17. There is a definite difference in them. Most noticeably at interstate speeds. Running heavy Overland rig and 4.10 axle ratio the transmission 8th gear is now for down hill only! According to Discount Tire Goodyear's were 59lbs and Milestar's are 71lbs. Also C range vs D range. So don't just assume the size is the only factor.

Cannot stress tire weight enough if you're just trying to gain a little height but not regear. I had a Tacoma TRD Off-road and it's stock tire size was common to much larger trucks (Super Duties, etc.). It was a bastard to find tires that weren't ten ply and 20 lbs heavier or more a piece than the OEM tire and in the same size. Going up to a slightly bigger tire opened up so many more options that weren't stupid heavy. The Tacoma was already bad enough on the freeway with stock tires as it was.

I have Toyo Open Country AT3s 35x11.5R17, load range C, and I really like them. They measured 33 5/8" tall mounted with vehicle weight when new and are about 10 1/2 or 11" wide overall as I recall. The narrower profile does not rub anything using the stock wheels on the narrower Sport S axles, and they stay neatly tucked under the flares. I did use a 1" front coil spring spacer and 3/4" rear. The front rubbed slightly offroad under articulation once or twice. I did not regear from 3.73, but I have a diesel, and the power loss is not substantial. The computer is re-calibrated using the AEV ProCal Snap. I lost a mpg or two, but not terrible, and they do grip much better than the factory highway tires so some added drag there. I have probably close to 20k miles on them with no signs of uneven wear, and they appear to have worn very little (no actual measurements taken).

I also just do the occasional simple trail, and these are great for that. I have found on road traction to be good in wet or snowy conditions, and they are not very loud on the highway with dry pavement.

I would also advise against load range E tires. I had those on a Tacoma, and the ride was much worse.

I also am running Toyo AT3 35/11.5/17 on factory wheels and 2.5 lift but had to install 1.75 wheel spacers because I hitting the lower control arms. I went with the 11.5 width because lighter weight, better gas mileage and was hoping that they would not rub. Instead of buying new wheels I had 1.75 spacers installed. I do have about 2 inches of wheel poke. Most of my miles are Hwy so this set up works for me. I changed the speedo with Jscan and getting around 18 to 19 mpg all around driving. And hitting 8th gear easy with this set up.

Which Teraflex 2.5" lift are you running?

Teraflex ST2 Sport. I also added with the lift Adjustable lower control arms, Bilstein shocks and adjustable track bar. It rides smooth as butter going down the road. This lift is for people that drive on the HWY and occasionally hit the trail. More for looks instead of offroad. Idea of how high 40 inches from the ground to top of the fender extension in the front, rear is the same.

Thanks. I had a Metalcloak 2.5" lift on my 2016 JK 2 door. I may eventually do something on my truck, but the offroading I plan to do in it won't be as rough as what i did in the last Jeep.

Your truck looks great btw. Saving it for reference later.
