A V8 or 540HP hurricane?
You can keep the overly complicated and failure prone I6. The power AND reliability is why so many want the v8. The 5.7L in my ram was driven hard for 120k miles with nothing but basic maintenance. Still problem free when I sold it.

Arguing power over all else is certainly common but it misses the value of the subjective. Dodge dropped the V8s at the end of 2023 and in 2024 and 2025 they sold between 70-90% fewer Chargers those years. The V8 is making a come back because of the subjective value they provide to the buyers that buy them. True to its meaning though, subjective also accounts for the fact that some people will never understand that value.

But for those that love the objective facts, the faster electric and turbo options out there are indeed faster, both from 0-60 and in terms of fiscal loss and financial hemorrhaging. Stellantis was worth ~80 billion in 2024, currently around 30 billion in value. They lost about half of that 50 billion between 2024-2025, over the course of 2 quarters actually. They themselves blamed their switch to EVs and dropping the V8.

An AMW Hemi with no MDS or VVT would be great but the factory one has that stuff just to complicate it.

The VVT adds something like 20% more power under the curve in the dyno videos I've seen so I'd hardly call that "just to complicate it". I'm with you on the MDS being useless, but that's easily turned off with a tazer no limits or other aftermarket plug in option. Even in the stock "complicated" form the Hemi has proven far more reliable than the hurricane.

My boss has a 5.7 Ram (its a fourth gen, not sure what year) and I'm pretty sure its sitting at around 180K miles with no issues other than the manifolds starting to tick slightly.

He bought a Honda Pilot to daily and haul visitors around in so I guess it's finally catching a break 😄
I joked with my ole lady recently that once my Gladiator is paid off, maybe I could look at a Hemi swap (5.7) if I could find a way to get the money.

She said how much? Im like $35K but its basically a new drivetrain and more.

She says 'Hmm, well I mean it's kinda worth it cause that's all the most expensive stuff to fix in a vehicle anyway....'

Girl is not helping our finances, lol.

I really like the VVT in my Camaro. The torque curve looks like a plateau. All 400 lb feet of torque from like 2800 to 5000 RPM. Flat line, lol. It pulls like a monster for a stock engine.

My LS3 was the same engine but non VVT and it felt a little stronger on the top end but was lazier down low. I'd take the VVT everytime.

I've had the exact same conversation with the wife already. It's already lifted and modified the way I want and even the $38k for the 6.4L is way cheaper than a new truck. She was surprisingly on board.

The power is the only thing that gets me. It's a great truck, Jeeps have become my 'safe space' vehicle wise. I've had them for the last 9 years, been all over the country in them, I know their quirks, etc.

if I could just pull 5500 pounds and less a little more effectively - this truck could very well live on for years around this house.

She'll do it now. I just want to sound cooler doing it 😂

Those faster turbo options don’t do so well against a V8 with forced induction.

The electric options, I’d have to dig a little deeper for those. 😆

I keep hearing about a compact V8 engine being developed by Stellantis. Has anyone heard more about this? The 4.0L size keeps getting thrown around.

Yeah, same. I kinda figured it was way out if there’s so little info. Out. ……..assuming it s a thing of course.
I'm normally not of the tinfoil hat wearing persuasion but I'm making an exception here.

We are looking to get a JLUR and have been debating a MY26 or waiting and ordering a MY27. The 2027 Wrangler ordering guide was posted over in the JL Wrangler forum and I had time to go through it. There are presently three engine options available in the Wrangler, the "6.4L V8 SRT HEMI MDS ENGINE (ESG)" in the Moab / Willy's 392, the "3.6L V6 24V VVT ENGINE UPG I W/ESS (ERC)", and then the "2.0L I4 DOHC DI TURBO ENG W/ESS-MAKE (EC1)".

In the standard equipment section it shows that the 392 Wranglers get the new "DANA M235 X-WIDE FULL FLOAT RR AXLE (DRX)" vs. what the Rubicons get: "DANA M220 WIDE FULL FLOATING RR AXLE (DRN)".

Now in the group detail for the automatic transmission is where I think that a fourth engine code "EC7" is mentioned, but not defined anywhere.
Screenshot 2026-06-06 at 7.39.23 AM.webp

What makes me think that "EC7" is another engine code is that SELEC-SPEED section where EC7 is slotted in there between EC1 the 2.0L turbo 4cyl and the ERC the 3.6L V6.

Is EC7 powerful enough that it _needs_ the M235 rear axle on a Rubicon? Is EC7 a 5.7 or 4.0 V8? Is it that new twin plug turbo 4 cyl? Is EC7 a cut and paste error from some other model ordering guide? I don't have a clue.

In googling what the EC7 code refers to this popped up…

In the Jeep ordering guide, the code EC7 refers to the 2.0L I4 Turbo Engine with Stop/Start (ESS). This is the Hurricane engine, which features an inline-4 cylinder design, port/direct injection, and intercooling. [1, 2, 3, 4]
