There are couple of additional benefits to 5 tire rotation though. If you’re only ever having those 4 tires on the ground, when you do need your spare due to a puncture, it’s going to be of a different diameter than the other 3. Rotating it in regularly ensures it wears at the same rate as the other tires, always ready to be swapped in without any size differential concerns. Also, if you never rotated your spare in, eventually it would just become too old and you’d have to toss it out, so you would have gotten zero miles out of that spare tire. On the other hand, the 5 tire rotation does require you to buy a matching 5th rim, which depending on the cost of your wheels might be a good chunk of change.
And you’ll trust that your spare is good and ready, as you’ve used it recently. And your fifth matching wheel (yes more cost) will match your offset, so will work properly with your suspension setup without rubbing. If you need your spare offroad, a matched setup is essential in my opinion. I’d hate to continue down a difficult trail with a non matching spare with a different wheel from 6 years ago.

The 4 vs 5 tire thing is purely a preference discussion. The math on cost vs. mileage is a wash.

As others have said, I'd probably do 5 tire on a Wrangler since the spare is visible and I'd want it to match. On the Gladiator, though, I see no real reason unless you do a spare relocation.
Cost is higher. It’s not a cost/mileage discussion. It’s for function. More functionality costs more, in virtually every industry.

But the functionality is the same. The tire you never rotated into the mix is still a tire that will mount on your vehicle and drive wherever you need to go.

I went 5 tires and bought an extra OEM rim for 2 reasons:

1) I'm OCD. Even if the spare is temporary, it looks wonky.

2) Tire brands often/sometimes change the design of tires over the 2-5+ years before you need a switch. I found out the hard way when I had Goodyear Duratracs. Now I don't have to worry about having an unmatching tire ...unless I lose 2 or more.

The rotation thing/5k extra miles is nominal, but most places do it for free around here in an effort to score your business (it works!). But every time I do it, the person grumbles a bit. 35's are heavy and it's a bitch getting it back up under the JT. LOL

No it isn’t if an owner doesn’t want to spend the money on a fifth matching wheel. Way more functionality out of five matching wheels and tires.

It’s easier to do a 5 way rotation on the ground, than a four way. You’re still unmounting and remounting 4 tires. But you only need one corner jacked up at a time. It takes me about 10 minutes. I don’t know why it’s hard to get the spare in and out either. There is literally a hand winch that does the lifting. I’ve done it at least 15 times with 37’s. No issue.

I'll agree to disagree. I've only ever seen Jeeps that drive on 4 tires functionally. You could buy 50 tires and wheels but you're only ever running 4. A spare is just a spare and will function as such regardless of wether it looks the same or was rotated in to the mix regularly.

You’re ignoring the wheel and offset entirely.

Can we alter the subject slightly to discuss if I should 6 or 7 tire rotate?

I have 3 matching 37’s on my trailer. I could do 8.

If your stock spare needs a different offset, what did you do to your Jeep to make it rub? Lower it? Narrow the axles?
12.5” wide tires will rub on factory offset wheels without a spacer. If I swap in the spare, I’d rub offroad. No beuno.
