So I looked at the video attached...wonder why they had him face down and two officers to cuff him? I did a few years with the CO CSP and never had to do that with a DUI.
Completely justified. Driver was running from an LE vehicle running Code 3. Active resistance. If it took 2 attempts to PiT the vehicle, that’s a further resistance level. In this day and age, a DUI doesn’t have to be just alcohol. With just 2 Officers on scene cuffing from the prone was the safest option for the officers and the public.

When you have a drugged up suspect pinned in with 3 vehicles and they STILL try to run by ramming a police vehicle you start to understand that fit has hit the Shan and you never know what’s going to happen. Better safe than sorry. I would have handled this in exactly the same manner.

Hell at that age not having a license isn't going to be what stops me from driving anyway if I am still able

Yes, the fact that we are posting here today, at least for me, means mission accomplished.
When I wake up in the morning and can still fog a mirror. Then it's a good day.

Well, I partially disagree with Bandits Lair. Perhaps he has first hand experience but I still disagree. The 'perp' was 81 years old and drunk. Not sure about his Gladiator but if I was going to 'run from' a cop, mine would do more than 65 mph! We don't see the first PIT attempt so....And I have had folks 'run' from me at low speeds when they are drunk, finally said they never heard the siren or saw the lights. Handcuffs, yes, absolutely, he was under arrest! But face down? I don't think so. Also, this guy was from Cortez! Not sure how much he knows about Cortez but drivers from there....well, anyway, I agree with Gizmo.

My aunt was killed by a drunk driver, I've been hit by two drunks (low speed thankfully) so I have a huge bias, I am totally fine with the guy being put to the ground and put in hand cuffs. We coddle drunk drivers way to much in my are, only to repeat themselves and often kill or injury somebody, I'm tired of it.

Back when I was cop in GA. I stopped a car for speeding the owner "driver" had it registered and insurance but she never had a driver's license in any state she had been driving without a license for over 50 years. One of the few tickets I ever wrote for "no driver's license" if not the only one. "Yeah for all the ones" who are why did you. My job as in traffic section so traffic enforcement, DUI's, and TAI was my primary job. 99 times out of 100 when someone said they didn't have a D/L it was suspended or revoked almost never a person who never had one.
When I was A.D. Army in infantry I did have several soldiers that never had a driver's license some were in 20's.
FYI when I started reading this thread I decided to go pour myself a 100 proof rye shot. :like::rock:

81 yrs old, drunk. He was having his last ride. No more license after this.
And obviously….. it should’ve been taken away long before this incident. 😳

To be old and wise. First you have to be young and dumb. And not get yourself killed in the process.

Learn from your mistakes. If not, you'll get an early dirt nap.

You start out in life with 2 buckets. The first bucket is full of luck. The second bucket is an empty bucket of experience. You hope that your bucket of experience fills up faster than your bucket of luck empties.
AMEN

So Janster, because I'm 82 and still driving my Gladiator (with a license that has never been 'lifted'), I assume you think my license should have been 'lifted' years ago? We have no previous info on the driver from the OP, just that he was drunk on that particular day. Maybe he was a habitual drunk driver, and if so, yes, should have lost it long time ago. But then we don't know if he even HAD a DL on that day...
And Y-Guy, I too have no mercy for drunk drivers. I saw too many wrecks and fatalities with them. Handcuffs, absolutely, every arrest gets them. But an 81 year old drunk put face down to be handcuffed? Maybe there was a reason but we just don't know enough about the actual incident.

I think charging into oncoming traffic is reason enough. Don't you?

Wonder if he actually has a current drivers license---probably.

Since we don't know the real details all this is just speculation, but he could have just as easily been under the influence of some mix of his medications.
I've had several very confused elderly people who just didn't know what was happening, drive up the off-ramp thinking it was the on-ramp. Sure, he shouldn't have been driving at all, but these things do happen.
Diabetics super low on blood sugar can appear drunk and be aggressive and then once the EMT's give them sugar gel they come back to normal. Who really knows without the details. I'm just glad he didn't kill anyone.
