This will get them kicked off the Play Store if they don't fix it. They are not allowed to offer sideload ( send you a link to download ) an app that is present in Play Store.

That's for updates if you bought through another source apparently.
If I tried to update or download through play store, I'd have to pay again.
They are also apparently changing how they sell it and collect the money - maybe Giggle is milking them like they do others......... dunno, but in my case, play store wasn't even in play since I bought via Amazon.

Heck, I've gotten many apps from sources other than play store - they can't force you to come to them for an upgrade if something was bought elsewhere.
I grabbed the apk file for other items in the past - partially because it was used where playstore wasn't possible to connect to. (like my Amazon firestick - you have to use the apk file to load apps on that)
Maybe you missed how I bought via Amazon originally? What would I do? be screwed because of Giggle's monopoly and demands? Screw 'em.

Funny, who gives a rip about Google's monopoly.........you don't work for them, do you?

Bruh I was just mentioning how Play Store operates and what would happen to the app if the dev violates their ToS. Many Android devices won't allow side load unless rooted. Not being on Play Store will hurt them. They'll fix the problem. Amazon also has to follow Google's rules because they license Android from them.

No tirade needed. Relax.

No tirade, just amazed you came back with defending Google and saying shame on the vendor when I said that I bought from Amazon. Right away you suggested the vendor could lose their right to sell on PS.
You must have missed where I said that I bought from Amazon.
My devices aren't rooted.
Didn't want to buy through Google PS. (for various reasons)

It's really too bad Google can't play nicely - at least Mickysoft allows you to install apps from almost any source and doesn't force you to buy through them.

(BTW - apparently a recent Google or play store update screwed up some udating - I've had several apps sitting in "update pending" mode for 2 weeks now, and another that got so bad I had to go in and shut off updates for it in settings. It's apparently a common thing out there)

Ok so yeah I wasn't defending Google or shaming any other vendor. What I did was provide some facts.

Good grief....

Here's what I said:

Maybe it will update through Google Play if you bought it there to begin with. I bought mine on Amazon because it was so easy to then just to open the Amazon app with my tablet and download it onto my tablet as well since as far as Amazon was concerned, I already paid for it and licensed it.
Likely the method of purchase is the difference? I did send him my Amazon receipt to show proof of purchase but he must have already looked it up based on my name and email as he was ready to go with the codes.
I showed I bought it via amazon, which doesn't do automatic updating, so they had me uninstall, install using their package.

And your response was this:
This will get them kicked off the Play Store if they don't fix it. They are not allowed to offer sideload ( send you a link to download ) an app that is present in Play Store.

I tried to figure out where this went south -
I think the part that got left out of this is - you were responding as if they were selling it directly.
Is that correct?
I was talking only of an update.
He wasn't selling me anything. It was for support, not sales.
Does that make more sense? Amazon doesn't have the same update or upgrade methods. At least not back then.

Their (AlfaOBD) web site says clearly it is sold through Amazon and Google Play Store.
Their site even details how they get their license codes and how it takes time, sometimes hours, if you buy through Google.
For the PC version, there is another vendor they work with for licensing, etc.

So don't contact the developer to BUY it, only for updates if you didn't buy through Google.
If you did buy through google PS - as another member pointed out, it should update when Google Play Store on your device detects a version difference between what you have installed and what the PS has.

It actually does if you bought it there as showed by the next post from another member. I acknowledged his post and said I bought via Amazon (so all I saw was the purchase option. )
Another guy said his was updated/current, and thus my next post.

Many Android devices won't allow side load unless rooted.
That would have to be something locked down by a 3rd party. Pure Android and most implementations have allowed sideloading an apk without rooting for ages. At LEAST the last five major versions include the option by default. Simply enable "install unknown apps" in the security settings. No root needed.

I found out that apparently Google has had an update of some sort in the past several months that has caused issues with certain app updates. I had a whole list of things that were not updating, they kept saying pending, etc. and that went on for weeks. Another one was causing issues saying it was waiting for connection and that's a known problem with Google (not the apps themselves) Still looking into it but it looks like a Google app trying to update on my phone prevented all other apps from updating until I flushed it out.

I've been installing APK files for years on various devices. Even as far back as 10 years ago when I started side-loading things onto my firestick.

Summary of AlfaOBD:
Buy through either Amazon or Google
Google will update it when there's a newer release (or it should, but Google has some problems lately)
Amazon - contact info@alfaobd for instructions for updating if you bought via Amazon
They use another service for the licensing of the PC version, you download that one via their provided links on the AlfaOBD web site.

I do Amazon for some things because if I want to install on a second device, it's easy.

Pros and cons to each.

AlfaOBD support will help in any case.

I highly recommend anyone buying AlfaOBD in the future buy the Windows version. There have been a number of items on different vehicles that have worked when changed by the Windows version but failed when changed by the Android version. @Jimmy07 can back me up on this.

Are you sure it's not a difference in equipment? If it's addressing the same location and placing the same bits - hard to see how it's a Windows vs. "other" thing.
I assume we're talking comparing using the exact same BT adapter making the exact same changes on the same truck and not two people saying "it didn't work for me" and the second saying "but it worked for me fine on my truck with Windows".
All other differences have been accounted for by using the same BT adapter (like the MX+ as the others have some known issues with speed) and the same truck. Meaning I tried it with my phone and you came along with your laptop and made the change stick.

Does the listing show the change was actually made?

The software has several places to make changes for timeouts and other settings, speed and so on.

If you make a change, does it show in the log of the current settings that it was made?

Premium TPM System Present: Yes
Paddle Shift Feature Present: No
Sport Mode Present: No
Auto Park Present: Yes
Passive Entry Present: Yes
Keyless Go Present: Yes

Does it show a change was attempted, like this?

Initial Wait Timer: 500ms
Maximum Wait Timer (0-254 sec): 0.000 sec
Car configuration change: Auto High Beam Module Location: ' NONE ' -> '4 '
Car configuration change: Auto High Beam CSM Present: ' NO ' -> '1 '
Car configuration change: Auto Highbeam: ' NO ' -> '1 '

It seems strange, but it has been known to happen. There's a bit of discussion about it on the various RAM forums. We are talking using the same adaptor. People have made a change (multiple times) using the android version and the change appears to have taken, but the feature doesn't work properly, then they make the same change with the Windows version and the feature works.

I unfortunately can't explain why.

Why won't AlfaOBD work? They keep updating it, there was an update just last month (2/26/2022)
it won’t talk to anything and gives unknown ecu error. Emailed them and they said they had not eta for support for the 22 models
