So I'm going to ask the question then. At what speeds should one expect to see 8th gear? I find that my transmission loves to sit in 4th gear. Some days it stays in 4th all the way up to 60 mph. I do see 6th but not a lot. I've done a bunch of trips from PA to TX and back. Speeds in the 70s and 80s. 8th gear does not happen without flipping into manual mode and forcing it.
3.73 gears. 2.5" lift, AEV pintler wheels, 315/70R17 KO2s,. Carrying some weight in the form of a Campershell and the KC light bar and a bumper. I'm certainly not overlander levels
I wouldn't say there's a speed per se. It's a load situation. 7th is still overdrive. The lift, tires, and light bar all took bad aerodynamics and made them worse. If you wanted to see 8th as often as stock you'd want 4.10s. Some feel the sport doesn't see 8th often enough stock so they'd be happier with 4.56s and 35s. I don't care what gear it's in and tend to roll 85mph for hours out west both up AND down hills which is why I see 8th regularly even on 37s and the stock 4.10s. For me and the speeds I drive 4.56s would be best, but regearing out here is $3k or more and the slight improvement simply isn't worth the money. Between the 2 JLURs and my JTM we've run 4.10s/33s, 4.10s/37s, 4.10s/38s, 4.56s/35s, 4.56s/37s, 4.56s/39s, and 5.38s/38s. The worst combo of them all was the 5.38s/38s. It was in 8th gear by 40mph and nowhere to go from there. Gained 1 mpg around town and lost 3 mpg on the freeway. I burn most of my fuel on roadtrips at speed so it was a large hit. Worst $3k I've ever spent on a Jeep mod period. If I drove slower and lived on the flat half of the country I'd lean a step lower than I do out here. For me and my use 35s/4.10s, 4.56s/37, and 4.88s/39s is where I'd be happiest if regearing was free. For the money I'll stick with 4.10s/37s and 4.56s/39s happily. May only see 8th at freeway speeds when it's flat with a tail wind or downhill, but there's a lot of that out west.

I’m in 8th at 50-55 mph and most. Light throttle maybe 45. That’s on 40’s. On 37’s it never downshifted unless it was an incredibly long hill that was pretty steep. On 40’s it will downshift to 7th on hills, maybe even 6th depending on speed, but everywhere else is 8th.

Don’t fear the gear. I just factor it into the cost of lifting with all of my jeeps.

As the only person in this thread currently running 37s and 3.73s, to answer the question asked, no it isn't that bad. You have to determine what is bad for you though because what works for me may not work for you. For a little of my background, I am likely the only person on here who came from 900+ HP Ram TRX to a Jeep Gladiator, I had lowered expectations on performance for a 285 HP brick from the start. My set up pulls my tractor and boat just fine, passing/ merging into traffic isn't scary and my MPG is actually pretty decent so it is what I want out of it but your experience/ needs may be different. It also tows my dead tractor in 8 inches of snow/ ice and while its still in gear and my wife is counter steering it against the direction I am trying to pull it but that is a story for another day :CWL:

Actual tire size, tire weight, vehicle drag due to lift and other modifications, terrain, speed, altitude, and also (I suspect) half truths told by many. Present company excluded
I mean mine will be doing 8th at 65-67 mph start pulling a grade immediately shift to 7th hold for a little bit 2-3 tenths some times longer depending on air temp I have noticed . And then hits 6th and will pull to the top holding about 61-62mph grade about 1 mile long and about 6 or 7% grade. Always hits 8th. ..scouts honor âś‹ On the good book đź“– .
What I truly find hard to believe is guys saying they never see 6th . Now 6th is 1:1 & 7th and 8th are over drive . 5th is the first under drive if they can't get it to go out of 5th , I have to agree something going or Something is rotten in Denmark.

Looking at a Jeep gladiator sport that is already done up with 37s. How bad is it on the stock gears? Any other issues to worry about
Been on 37's for about half a year. 3.73 gears. At first I had no speedo calibration tool with my old 34's, I quickly knew I needed one once I had my 37" Firestone destination m/t's installed. Didn't see 7 or 8th gear on the highway and lots of gear searching from the transmission. I installed a flashcal + and everything was back to normal. Actually it rolls better, more smooth and comfortable. I'm very happy, feels like a truck finally.

I"m sport s max tow ,4.10s vs 3.73s. I have the short 37s being the BFG KO2 but around town its fine but she could use a little lower gear for high speed running so I us manual 7th gear and its not bad

I have 37s with 4:10. I have a Banks Peddle Master. Mine is fine around town and on the highway. I don’t go offroad, so I can’t comment on that...

Gears gears gears.
Will it turn them, sure. Will it suck, most definitely. Just bite the bullet, do some 5.13’s, and enjoy.

Driving from the tire shop to the gear shop on 35’s with my wife’s JLUR was bad. The constant shifting and lugging and lazy acceleration, just no.

I pass cars as easily on 40’s as I did stock. Do not fear the gear.

I’ve had 37’s to 40’s on 5.13’s and you couldn’t even convince me 4.88’s are ok. Just gear it deep and enjoy it.
