I wouldn't say there's a speed per se. It's a load situation. 7th is still overdrive. The lift, tires, and light bar all took bad aerodynamics and made them worse. If you wanted to see 8th as often as stock you'd want 4.10s. Some feel the sport doesn't see 8th often enough stock so they'd be happier with 4.56s and 35s. I don't care what gear it's in and tend to roll 85mph for hours out west both up AND down hills which is why I see 8th regularly even on 37s and the stock 4.10s. For me and the speeds I drive 4.56s would be best, but regearing out here is $3k or more and the slight improvement simply isn't worth the money. Between the 2 JLURs and my JTM we've run 4.10s/33s, 4.10s/37s, 4.10s/38s, 4.56s/35s, 4.56s/37s, 4.56s/39s, and 5.38s/38s. The worst combo of them all was the 5.38s/38s. It was in 8th gear by 40mph and nowhere to go from there. Gained 1 mpg around town and lost 3 mpg on the freeway. I burn most of my fuel on roadtrips at speed so it was a large hit. Worst $3k I've ever spent on a Jeep mod period. If I drove slower and lived on the flat half of the country I'd lean a step lower than I do out here. For me and my use 35s/4.10s, 4.56s/37, and 4.88s/39s is where I'd be happiest if regearing was free. For the money I'll stick with 4.10s/37s and 4.56s/39s happily. May only see 8th at freeway speeds when it's flat with a tail wind or downhill, but there's a lot of that out west.So I'm going to ask the question then. At what speeds should one expect to see 8th gear? I find that my transmission loves to sit in 4th gear. Some days it stays in 4th all the way up to 60 mph. I do see 6th but not a lot. I've done a bunch of trips from PA to TX and back. Speeds in the 70s and 80s. 8th gear does not happen without flipping into manual mode and forcing it.
3.73 gears. 2.5" lift, AEV pintler wheels, 315/70R17 KO2s,. Carrying some weight in the form of a Campershell and the KC light bar and a bumper. I'm certainly not overlander levels
