I get some pretty annoying chugging/surging at a slow speed when super light pedal is applied. We have a long driveway and sometimes my father in law is using it as a walking path so I gotta basically crawl down it. It gets very bouncy? Chugging? light surging? when barely on the pedal. I'm thinking maybe the throttle body needs to re-learn?

Should be the same basic procedure as the JK and JL.

1) Get in vehicle & put on seat belt
2) Press Start button twice to put it into Run (do not start engine)
3) Wait for the engine light to appear.
4) Slowly press the accelerator pedal, taking about 5-10 seconds to go all the way to the floor, then about 5-10 seconds to come all the way up.

I’ll give this a try, thanks!

IIRC, you should also stop for a few seconds at WOT before letting the pedal come back up. Forgot about that.

No, I still feel it. Unless I did it wrong. I need to try to remember to monitor throttle input/commanded vs actual throttle. It feels like when I give/ask for 7% throttle it gives me 15% or something like that. Fine control of the throttle at low speeds, even up to 20 mph, are kinda jerky.

Is the driveway mostly straight? just put it into 4L when crawling along your driveway.

Just a thought--At slow, long driveway speeds, my JT hunts for the right gear (2nd or 3rd), shifting back and forth and leaving the feeling that the throttle is varying.

To avoid that on our neighborhood's 10 mph section (a short stretch), I just put the trans in manual mode and leave it in 2nd until the main road is reached.

All the best

It is straight but it's more of annoyance than anything. Shifting into 4lo to avoid that weird whatever it is might get to be more annoying than the original symptom.

This is at a slower speed, like coasting at idle. With super light accelerator input it kinda slams forward. I pointed it out to my wife and she's like "yeah I'm already used to your crappy driving" all because of this one issue :)

This sounds like what I complained about quite a while ago. Like a clunk and surge at very light pedal off idle in gear. I thought it was play in the drive line ? I was told it was rock crawling mode or something like that. It keeps you moving with out touching pedal real lightly that kicks in and out ?

My 2020 has been doing this since they replaced my heads at 40k miles. It never did it before and now it does it. They have relearned it, then changed the throttle body and pcv valve. I just changed the map sensor myself yesterday and it seemed better but still does it. Just off idle around 700rpm. Like if you have a toe on the trottle it’ll move up and down and jerky a little. Notice it especially when I’m inching my trailer back or inching up the driveway real slow . Going to do some the relearn procedure right now since i just swapped the map sensor .

I knew I didn’t like how my Gladiator acted when ever I tried to drive slowly through crowded campgrounds. I followed your process this morning and it is amazing the change it made. Thanks a bunch

Mine is often inconsistent just off idle. Taking off from a stop it will do one of three things and I never know which:
  • Poor response and barely move, requiring more than usual pedal
  • Jack rabbit start
  • Hesitate. A strong initial surge forward, a pause, then accelerate.
I've also seen it where I can press the pedal very slowly while in park/neutral and the RPMs will rise, then fall slightly, then start rising again.

I tried the non-scan-tool method a few times with no change. The calibration procedure in JScan makes it better (less inconsistent) for a while but it keeps coming back. I'd take it to the dealer but I feel it will be a a waste of time. It will be another case of "no problem found" . I'm waiting for it to get either worse or better or to find a solution on one of the forums.
