I was thinking of buying from military surplus for my next set of tires and was wondering if anyone else has purchased tires and/or other items.
What has been your experience?

Is this site legit and are there other sites to consider?

https://www.govplanet.com/jsp/s/search.ips

They have various trailers that would be great for an overlanding adventure.

I can't speak for the reputability of that particular website, but I think you're definitely on to something there.

Been apart of govplanet for a year or two now. It is pretty legit but I just haven't won anything I bid on, I am a sucker for the 10k and 15k jp8 generators, just good ones go for way too much.

These look like a great platform to build upon.

The only downside to these military trailers is their weight.

Tires used on public roads must be DOT Certified. A code is moulded into the sidewall. The other person's lawyer will know eventually. I buy surplus, usually insignificant things like ammo.

Pretty much this. Most of those trailers are designed to be towed by HEMTT and 2.5 ton or higher vehicles and weigh a metric shit ton. Pentle size and height takes some creative adaptation on truck hitch setup to use. Some are also based on 24 Vdc for the wiring and lighting.

The M1082 trailers are huge, the deck height is 5ft tall, the top rails are over 6ft high, and the empty weight is over 6,000lbs. I’m also pretty sure that the axles use air brakes, not electric. Even the smaller M1102 trailers are really too big (in my opinion) as a good match for the Gladiator. With that said, you can get a lot of product for your money through military surplus (govplanet), just make sure to know exactly what you’re bidding on.

This is not true in Michigan. There is no reference to DOT in the vehicle code, tires section.

I'm pretty sure this is true for most other (all?) states too.

Yeah, that is some serious weight and wipes out any thought of using them for a rig setup.

Likely a situation where USDOT code fills the space, so a state won't have it codified. Same thing as headlights and taillights, I'd reckon.
