I just ponied up on some 38 x 13.50's on beadlocks and I like to carry the spare in the bed when trailing.
Does anybody have a good solution to secure a 38" spare, layed flat in the bed? Mainly just to keep it from sliding around. Amazon has a couple of the Y-Ratchet Straps, and I came across this one as well:

https://speedstrap.com/product/2-hd-3-point-spare-tire-tie-down-with-swivel-hooks/

I wouldn't be opposed to a setup like this either:

https://mammothracing.com/products/...MIoNHMyKb3hwMVadfCBB3fcx1SEAQYAiABEgKl1_D_BwE

I have a tri-fold bed cover that I'd like to keep, so the vertical mounts aren't an option at this point. I dont' have anything against Overland Racks, but they just aren't my style.

I'm just looking for some ideas.

Thats not what im using this for but the piece in the bottom of the bed is keyed with T nuts at specific positions and tying a spare down under a tonneau with it would be easy

Well...I was hoping that maybe, just maybe I could shoe-horn that 38 in where the stock spare goes. It's a nogo for sure, unless I wanted to maybe completely deflate it and wedge it up in there.
I've got to figure out the organization in the bed with my recover gear and toolboxes before I start drilling mounts into the bed.
Pic for an update.

You can't remove the head shield and get a track bar with a bend to clear 38's?

Worst case just mount a 37" spare, it's not perfect, but it's only .5"ish different and will get you to place where you can deal with your flat.

I've opted to play FAFO. A 37x13.5 won't fit under the bed and I also refuse to use up all of my bed space for a spare.

Time will tell. Last time I needed to use my spare was on a '87 Bronco II back in '97 when I was a young, dumb and inexperienced offroader. Since than Uncle Sam gave me 20 years of experience and countless hours of training

I was kind of hoping the size would be close enough, but it ain't happening. I was already running 37's, so the heat shield is already gone and I've got a high-clearance rear track bar already.

Here's a pic of the size difference. Granted the 37 is rolled slightly closer to the camera, but using the level/tape measure, the difference was just a touch over an inch.

Any updates on his thread? Btw. Super helpful thread.

I just got my 38” tires (putting a MetalCloak 3.5” short arm lift kit). And am hoping to mount the spare in my truck bed.

Don’t want to drill holes so looking for suggestions. Maybe regular ratchet straps to the 4 D-rings already in the truck bed??

Has anybody done this? Can u share some pics if you have already done so? Thanks a bunch

I got the Y-Strap off off Amazon and just used a stainless steel tie down from a Farm Supply store. It's rated for 1200lbs, so it should be good. I tried to get one as slim as possible and mounted it in the lower ribs of the bed, so if I haul something flat, it shouldn't stick up too much. I was the same and wasn't keen on drilling holes, but couldn't come up with a solid solution.

Be aware to get the correct tie down angle, the tie down bolt holes landed right where there is a structural rib on the bottom side of the bed. I had to position the tie down where one bolt is outside of the rib, and one is inside. There are holes in the rib big enough to get a small break-over bar and socket up in there. Another option would have been to move the tie down point rearward several inches, but then my Harbor Freight boxes wouldn't fit.

Thank you very much. The pic and your descriptions were both super helpful.

I do need the cargo space so am trying to decide if I should go with a vertical spare tire mount. Sadly that also requires drilling.

Added complication for me is that my Gladiator is parked in my garage is such a manner that my vertical spare needs to be on the driver side.

So that I can keep the passenger side free as that is where the passenger side camper top side doors can flip up. And I can put things in and pull them out easily.

I like the DV8 vertical spare tire carrier, and the instructions say it is ambidextrous. Supposedly one can mount 2 of them.

https://www.amazon.com/DV8-Offroad-Designed-Gladiator-Vertical/dp/B086Z4JXC6

It does look like it needs bed rails installed for 2 more anchor points on the side. Dang it. I already spent hours putting the c-clamps on for the camper top. Will have to take them out if install a bed rail.

Maybe one solution is the strap it the way you have it. Under a flat metal deck. And all my camping gear to be above the metal deck.

I do 5 tire rotations (free lifetime at Discount Tire), so it won’t be very often that the spare needs to get pulled out. Maybe once every 9mths as I don’t put much miles on the Jeep.

Decisions, Decisions, Decisions…. 😂

I hear ya on the needing the bed space. I have seen some overland racks that has the option of mounting the spare under the top cross bars, but that's not an option for me personally.

I have three of the Harbor Freight boxes that has recovery stuff, compressor, air down/up hoses, bottle jack and some asst tools. Those boxes, a couple of rotopax's and the spare pretty much take up the entire bed.

I really like my hard bed cover, so the vertical spare deal wasn't an option for me, but is a good idea for sure, especially with a spare that big.
