I was impressed by the Falken AT3s on my JTR at the end of last winter, but didn't put them through the ringer yet in Montana. Just 3-4" of snow on top of ice a few times playing and they did great. However, I definitely put some General Grabber ATXs through a few years of ice-packed hell and deep snow (wet & dry) on my Taco. They are 3 peak and studdable if you really get on the ice. I'm planning on getting a dedicated set for winter and stud them for my LJR.

I've usually ran dedicated studded snows in the past and am comparing to those. Dedicated snows are best (for icy on-road), but 3 peak ATs are the next best thing, and better for the deeper off-highway stuff.

More votes for the Duratracs and Falken Wildpeak AT3Ws from me. Duratracs are much lighter and have a deeper tread depth when new, however they are only a 2 ply sidewall that are prone to cuts if you wheel with them. The Falkens are heavier, quieter, and (I believe) have a 3 ply sidewall. I've had Duratracs on multiple vehicles in the past and have the stock 285/70/17 Falkens on JTRD. I was pleasantly surprised with them last winter, they handled with white stuff quite well.

I've run both Toyo ATIII and BFG KO2 because they are both 3peak winter rated. Both are great tires but here are my observations:

The KO2s seemed to perform slightly better in the snow, they felt more pliable in colder weather

The Toyos are slightly noisier at highway speeds

The Toyos are TOUGH, I abused the hell out of them and never had an issue, though I've never punctured a KO2 either

In the end I decided to go with a 37 KO2 for my next set. They run a little small but they are so light compared to other brands that I'm not concerned about the added stress of a 37 on anything

Preface: Delaware driving so mostly flat and not a TON of snow. But certainly enough to be a problem.

ive had BFGs/Yokohama Geolander ATs/ nitto / mickey Thompson tires in the past and felt they all broke loose with nearly no effort and would just slide like a toddler learning to ice skate.

I know it will be blasphemy here but the best AT tire ive had in the snow has actually been the Dueler ATs.

my wifes michilin defender ltx ms tires have also been phenomenal.

I was actually wondering about the ply yeaterday. The wildpeaks that cam on my JTR only have 2 ply sidewall. so same as the duratracs. Not sure if theres any other options with a 3 ply? It would be nice though.

I stand corrected. I thought the Falken were 3 ply sidewall. Regardless, I don't know if I've ever heard of a cut sidewall on a Falken AT, whereas the Duratrac are rather infamous for it.

Yeah I was worried about that when I had duratracs on my big huge old truck. It didn't see super crazy off road but did see some sharp rocks. maybe I got lucky.... But never a sidewall slice. That is a huge concern though.

I sliced 2 of them on my JK within about 6 months. Switched to Krawlers soon after. I love the Duratracs, but I'll never have them again on anything that sees the offroad.

Another vote for duratracs. Been running them on all my jeeps and my plow truck. Good in snow and if you take care of them you get great mileage out of em.

After reading dozens of independent reviews, reviews on tire sites, and head-to-head comparisons, I went with General Grabber A/TX

Then last winter, my decision was validated by the fact I have been driving several miles on snowy, hilly, curvy roads with snow and snow pack, and slippery spots and went to shift back into 2 wheel drive and found I had driven all those miles IN 2 wheel drive it did so well.
I've had Falken tires - Rubicon "take-offs" but I find these even better, so I'm comparing both on the same exact truck on Iowa winter roads.
I'm impressed and will buy them again when these wear out. On my truck on our roads, they beat the Falkens in the same circumstances on the same truck with me as the same driver.

(and as my neighbor says about his - they balance easily)
