I was looking at cai kits, watching videos. It seems like an actual power loss over stock.
im wondering, since it appears to me that our box is effective as is…

anyone know where i can get just the intake tube? That would eliminate the silencer and hopefully give a smoother overall flow to the incoming air. If nothing else, look better and give the growl without (hopefully) any HP loss.

thanks ! :whatsgoingon:

The ones that are actually tested for air movement, ONLY work with their respected air boxes.

Believe it or not, and I think it was Gale Banks that did the test, stock configuration is the cleanest set up.

Tip - stop watching the dingy videos on the internet.
You don't want a smoother flow for real power - you want some turbulence going in.

Too many videos don't take the whole universe of things into account and look only at one single thing. Of course everyone making videos on youtube is an engineer for Boeing or some other large company and takes every single thing into account, like pumping efficiency, PCM adaptations, long and short term trims and so on.

any tube actually. I mean I could make it out of pvc, but that will look like trash. Not doing that, lol.
Did you ever think maybe it's that tube that is causing problems, not the box itself? Do you know which parts of the whole system is not working for the best power situation?

Notice the PVC in my setup?

To get the intake tube you want, you will have to purchase the Mopar CAI kit. It uses the lower half of the stock air box, which allows you to continue to use the OEM air filter. A new top is included with a larger opening to match the new air tube.

Starrskream, you already acknowledge that it might not give a HP increase and if nothing else looks good and gives a little more growl, would be good enough.
I have the Mopar CAI designed by Jeep still has front grill inlet into air box , tube is about twice the size but really opens up the under hood area. You can use the factory dry filter or the deep pleat performance filter (still dry) which I did. I am one of the people happy with the Penstar for my needs including towing , at times I wish for a small V-8, but most of the time like the economy of the Penstar.
My feeling is the Mopar CAI does not hurt power , I feel it helps but have no proof other then seat of pants, I like the sound , I like I can look down and see steering box and differential. If you buy the CAI kit contact me I’ll pay you fair for the performance filter and there are always people looking for the hood grill cutout…..Jack

Just get a K&N filter and call it a day. I feel like it helped allow the engine breathe easier (I can feel a difference) and helped with mpg. Also dealer cant complain or void warranty if they want to difficult when dealing with a warranty issue.

sure they can, because it's not a like for like filter and doesn't meet the same standards.
Power? MPG? Butt dyno and placebo effect.

These things don't breathe enough to need more air - you must race yours and stick in the above 5,000 RPM band a lot.
Heck, these are in low-lift intake mode most of the time unless you push it hard.

K&N, the very last thing that would ever touch a vehicle of mine.

He's shooting for sound, cool factor - and he's got a couple really very good suggestions on that bit.

(I need to dig up the horrible scientific ISO test results of various filters again....... for those who love bad test results)

I am going to get that AFE one, just to clean up the engine bay a little. Hopefully it isn't to loud, I can't stand the loud CAI sound. Not sure, but from the looks of it I can use a stock filter with the AFE CAI. I basically just want the tube.
