I’m looking for advice on dash cams for the gladiator. As I have a soft topper, by rear windshield is essentially unusable for a rear camera. I’m looking to see if anyone has positive experience with a setup that allows recording when driving, and parked, with a camera that I could hypothetically mount somewhere on the tailgate or bumper. Thanks very much.

I’m curious about this as well. I’ve thought about going the same route, because every time I’ve asked about possible solutions, all I get are solutions for hardtop jeeps.
I’m getting setups for our other two “normal cars”, and that’s easy. The rear cameras mount inside the rear windshield. As you said, it would work fine for hard tops without a topper, or a topper with actual glass in the hatch. But I need a solution for external attachment. I’m going to do some research on my own of course, but thought I’d post this to get opinions from those who have done this.

I currently have a BlackVue camera, so I’ve been looking at doing this:

https://www.thedashcamstore.com/blackvue-dr770x-waterproof-exterior-truck-camera-erc1-c/

You can do a variety of their camera cameras with the exterior truck camera, like the 750, 770, or 900.
Cool. I’ll look at that. I just saw that Wolfbox has a setup with a Digital Touch screen rear view mirror for the front, and a weatherproof rear that comes with it. Even with a pile of accessories, it doesn’t look like the whole setup would cost much more than $350.

Edit: my trusted car audio/electronics guy said wolfbox sucks.

I'm running a VanTrue cam with their hardwire kit in my e46. It has alarmingly clear front and rear views and has the interior cam. It was the best rated cam from C&D earlier this year's big brother.

My only complaint is I bought their branded SD card thinking it would be the best option but it shit the bed about 2 weeks after I installed it. I replaced it with a SanDisk high capacity, high speed write from Best Buy but cannot remember the size or model. No issues in 4 months with that.

The connection for the rear cam is USB-C, so I think you ought to be able to grab any license plate frame cam and connect.

How did you mount the camera outside?

I’ve since talked again to my auto electronics guy. He recommended Rydeen. I ordered from him the Rydeen Tombo 360x. Front and rear, multiple rear mounting options, the front replaces the rear view mirror with digital, has split screen for front and rear, and 360 degree camera in front that starts recording if someone walks near your jeep. They don’t even need to touch it supposedly. Local shop, and he’s never steered me wrong. I’ll do the install, but shopped local. I’ll report back with results and my review.

I’m super curious where you end up mounting the camera. I’ve been wanting to finish this for a while, just couldn’t figure out a good spot.

I will absolutely share results with pictures. So far, the options are license plate frame, and a proprietary bracket that lets me put it wherever. I ordered both brackets and will decide when I have them in my hands. The proprietary is plan A as I can go higher to avoid some headlight interference.

I second BlackVue... I've had 5 Blackvue 2-channel cameras (front and rear) over a span of 10 years on 5 cars and I love them. My latest is this one for my Gladiator:

I’m looking at that exact one right now. Where did you end up mounting the rear camera?
I still have to mount the rear camera. I was waiting for my Lone Peak Camper, which was installed last week. I'm going to mount the rear camera just above the tailgate door. I'll have to send a picture when done.
