Buckle up the seat belt. It is designed to keep you from injuring yourself .

Or killing yourself while stepping out of the truck to get your mail out of the box.
I try to go less than 10mph when I swoop on the mail. Looks ultra cool when you get it right. Looks ultra stupid when you fall and break every bone in your body twice.

What I like to do is wheel into my driveway, slip into neutral, kill the motor, and coast up to my parking spot. The first time I did that with the Gladiator, the damn thing said, "I don't think so," and slammed into park.
It could've at least waited until I'd rolled a few feet!

Interesting how the two groups argue for or against a factory control. I don't claim to understand why the manufacturer has the auto park feature.

I just realize that every vehicle I have previously owned never had auto park and I am still alive as I type this response. I never fell out of vehicle nor did I try and stand on the "nerf bars" while driving.

What is interesting, the only door it is connected to is the driver door. So all the safety nanny's out there, what about your passengers safety? In fact, you have no control over your passenger. At least you can control yourself, but maybe not since the manufacturer has to install a safety switch for you....

Kind of like placing a sticker that says "caution-hot". Maybe you need to be alerted and that is fine. But don't make the assumption that everyone else does.

I am one of those that explains what it is, why it is, and how to work with it. I don't advocate for it, and don't see anyone else hailing it as a good thing to have in their Jeep.

I don't really like the AutoPark, but have learned how to work around it. AutoPark came about due to a celebrity who got out of his Jeep without putting it in park and was run over.

The reason Auto Park exist people sometime confused the transmission knob with another knob thinking they were putting the vehicle in park when they actually turned an another knob, then get out the vehicle to perform some task thinking the vehicle was in park and the die a horrible death.

A Starship pilot's lawsuit forced all Ram/Chrysler/Jeep products to have this feature. Even though most have the console stick shift they just applied to all of their products to cover their a$$.

So while backing the Jeep with the door open just keep light pressure on the brake pedal while the Jeep is moving and it Auto Park won't engage Captain.

Uh, and other injuries. Not just that death but injury and property damage. Anyone watch the "funniest home videos" thing? People dont pay attention and/or are stupid. Any idiot can get a license.

New BMWs have that auto park as well and won't move if the door is open.

Use will grow.
In the past you could not take the keys out if the vehicle wasn't in park (some vehicles) so you could not exit a vehicle and remove the keys. It was a reminder.
Then comes the idiotic Jeeps with the electronic shifter with zero tactile feel - you had to look at the cluster to ensure you were in the desired gear. They had no end of complaints about that stupid design. (our 2015 had that and it sucked, even my wife complained constantly about it)

This has been coming for a long time and the death of a star may have brought it to the top again, but that's not the reason it exists - it's been gaining traction for a long time. It's not only due to that death. There have been other injuries and incidents of property damage.

There are work-arounds for those who rightly need to have a door open or for some other reason, it interrupts a process.
