I just skipped to the end after liking one post above. A real spare is important if you're a long way from home. Also, sometimes a matching tire cannot be found when needed right away, causing extended issues. With a matching wheel you can get into a 5 tire rotation, effectively getting 20% more miles out of your tires if done correctly. DO IT!!

I’ve had to use a spare twice over the years and I’ve helped a few folks change flat tires. I can’t imagine leaving town without a usable fifth wheel & tire, but I’ve known folks that swear that you don’t need a spare, as they claimed to have never used one.

Like many things in life…you do you.

Keeping the zombie thread going. ?

You’re getting 25% more miles, but a set of tires will cost 25% more, too.

I run a 35” spare which matches my winter tires. Summers are 37’s.
My preferred is the plug kit and compressor until I can get a proper patch.

Clearly yes there is a cost! My feeling is having a matching spare is nice, but what if the next set of tires are different or larger, then that unused spare is can be a waste.

Zombie thread, already answered, but I want to +1 that if you need a bigger tire for a spare but can't or don't want to pony up for brand new - call around to tire shops in your area. Easy to find worn take-offs in the right size, still have tread left over, safer than running a badly mismatched spare, and not expensive.

It's still a better plan to get 5 tires at once, and rotate them all through, but life happens

Just make sure to lower the pressure on the opposite side to try and lower the tire an inch to make the axle think there's a 33 on it.
Lowering pressure does not alter the diameter. The larger tire with lowered presssure still rotates fewer times than the smaller spare. This does nothing to mitigate different tire diameters. Height isn’t the issue.

i have 37s. on facebook i found some barely alive 38s x3 and put them on my stock rims. after a blow out i rock the 38 on one side and switch out the other tire on the axle to a matching 38 when i got home. i got these dirt cheap and drove on them for a week while my new 37 came in. no issues with my LSD rear.

Seriously?
The radius variation is <5mm (1/5") when going from 20PSI (140kPa) to 38PSI (260kPa)!
The radius change due to speed from ~12mph to ~75mph is nearly as great.
You're splitting hairs, here.
The diameter of the tire will change an insignificant amount (~3%) with pressure change.

Kevin
They're using baby tires.

Replaced stock tires with Toyo OC III's 35's.
Apparently I only bought 4 not 5.
The spare is original 33.
The toyos are E rated, so assume unlikely to get a flat.
Do I need to get a 5th toyo ?
Assume I couldn't put the 33 spare on in a pinch if I got a flat

thoughts appreciated !
I purchased 4 Toyo AT’s (35”) and ended up going back to my tire shop and asked for the cheapest 35” AT tire they had for a spare. I ended up with some cheap generic brand, but IF I need it, at least it will be the same size. Can’t remember the cost, but I remember thinking it was much cheaper then the Toyo and the tread really wasn’t that bad. Kind looked like the BFG tread.
