Just got back from Carova, where I turned on all the whizbangs and ripped up towards the NC/VA state line in the middle of the night. 11/10 would do again. The Mojave was in its element.
Did that at night a couple times in my 2004 Tacoma TRD years ago but I think I hit at most 35mph. Only problem was last minute moose test swerves around the half buried pilings... You're a very brave man to do it in a vehicle that can actually handle the speed!

It was all fun and games until we realized we weren't the only ones on the beach. Captured this photo of a half-dozen horses walking the surf at midnight. Our speed dropped significantly after that encounter.

wild pic! Never saw the horses at night driving. usually would see their road apples in the morning running along the beach.

Camping on Assateague I’ve gotten out of the tent more than a few nights to take a leak only to face a horse grazing and looking back at me.

Wondering if anyone regrets purchasing a Mojave for the ride quality or comfort?
No front locker would be my only negative. Other than that truck has been awesome no issue’s, drives nice down the road ,been fun off the road (trail flames attest to that) coming from a 2014 wrangler JKU the only thing is paying more attention to picking lines on obstacles do to the length

The mojave is the only Jeep (~15 so far between the wife and I over the years) that has stock shocks worth running period. Added the AEV 2" kit specifically to retain the stock shocks. The thing is amazing on 37s at speed in the desert. Wash boards at 75mph no problem. Whoops, ruts, drifting turns like a Subaru, the thing is planted. The perfect truck for our desert property in AZ that is 15+ miles out washboarded dirt roads. Took the f150 work truck out there and it shook like it was going to fall apart. It's not Raptor or trx good, but for $30k+ less it's simply amazing. And it rock crawls better than either of those wide body rigs could dream of.

There’s wild horses just grazing around? Wild. Nothing like that here in NE. The campground is right on the beach?

As for this thread: the only thing I regret is not getting the 4auto option to get the cv joints. I find the turning radius with the standard 4 wheel drive system pretty bad. Much less angle you can put into the wheel before it binds compared to my JK.

Yep. Assateague has two sections: A state park with a public beach and then a section with improved camping (power/water/sewer on many sites) and outstanding bathrooms/showers with running potable water, wash stations, etc. If you get lucky you can get an outdoor shower facing west to watch the sun set. MD DNR did a great job several years ago upgrading camp baths across the state and Assateaugue IMO is the best. You camp inside of the dunes then cross them to get to the beach.

The National Seashore has primitive camping in the northern section, and beach access with an annual OSV permit required through the NPS. You can drive from the end of the road on the MD side to the VA state line (about 15 miles) over the sand. At the VA line there is a fence, only way to access that end is through Chincoteague, VA. Same permit, fortunately. You can camp overnight on the MD OSV area only in the designated Bullpen and only if you're 100% self sufficient with onboard toilet and no water discharge. Most people down there are in 1T trucks with slide in campers. Otherwise if you are on the sand at night you had better be actively fishing. Park police do not screw around.

The ponies according to legend are descended from Spanish galleons wrecked off shore but that doesn't seem too plausible. The ponies have relatively free rein on the island but there are two distinct herds: One in VA and one in MD (that's why there's a fence) and do cause some issues. They're wild and tourons will try to pet them, feed them, etc before getting a hoof to the noggin or bitten. There are volunteers that monitor the herd and will try to shoo them out of the camping area... and keep the two legged animals away from the 4-legged ones. You do have to secure your food just like in the woods with bears- they know how to get into coolers and trash cans. Chincoteague_pony

Now, after that word salad, what you wanted to see: pony pics!

This is the J loop of the camp ground, where we usually camp because it's one of the dog friendly spots.

Hadn't even finished setting up camp when they rolled through.

This is on the beach adjacent to the camp ground.

On this same trip Annie and I went about 8 miles down the OSV and set up the rods and beach tent. Closed my eyes for just a moment or two and woke up to them thundering down the beach through the surf, running around our spot. Most incredible thing I've ever seen on that beach and I've been camping there regularly for 30 years.

I am starting to in a way. Now that I’ve installed a camper on it and some other modifications I really am losing what made the Mojave special. My next upgrade is going to be some HD coils and new shocks. We’ll see see how it rides after that.

If I could do all over again, I would probably get a diesel Rubicon. Really wouldn’t have to worry about changing gears for 37, I would get better mileage, and I wouldn’t have to worry about installing a front locker again or sway bar disconnects.

No regrets here. Coming from a few lifted F150's and Silverado's, the Mojave handles like a dream. Those lifted trucks looked great and all, but non lifted they sat so low to the ground they'd scrape everywhere I went. The lift kits certainly didn't make them ride or handle any better. This Mojave non lifted has about the same clearance as those 6" lift kits that rode like tanks. You don't know what you don't know until you try it. At least in my case. So glad I made the switch! I never thought in a million years I'd enjoy a smaller vehicle like this. But so far, so good!
