Only when needed. Same with lockers.

Trail you are on will dictate when. To this, trail situational awareness helps.

Probably has more to do with the 6spd manual but I had to use 4L a lot in the winter backing into my spot on my inclined icy gravel driveway. I had a lot of trouble getting the shifter into 4L. Hopefully it gets easier in time.

On trails where you are cruising between obstacles, I'll switch back and forth. No sense crawling there if you don't have to.

4H if going fast (gravel and dirt roads). 4L for everything else.

I generally use 2H and 2H with the rear locker the majority of the time. Especially transiting from one area to the next it's just more entertaining. Since there is no limited slip with the lockers, this is the best substitute.

I figure it's obvious when it's time for 4L and low and slow is your friend.

I use 4L a LOT more in my YJ with a 5 spd, the taller axle gears and taller TC gears make for a very different experience even with a short 1st, the JTR auto is geared so deep in comparison. My Ranger was the same way as my YJ, sticks don't have the rubber band torque converter and it really makes a big difference.

Saw a comment in the thread about overheating automatics, my former father in law was convinced his H2 would downshift to low range when it needed to. I never bothered to argue, since my ex-wife loved her some low range and never did that kind of stupid in her H2. Testament to the GM transmissions that that old H2 was still running at 130K last I saw it.

Hello,

Been going out to do trails around Denver on a weekly basis, been hitting trails that are rated 4, 5, 6 out of 10.

Question is do people generally switch between 4H and 4L depending on the individual sections of the trail that require 4L? Or do people leave it in 4L and let it get up to 4th or 5th gear to get up to 10mph?
